Just curious.

Please indicate model and engine type. I couldn't include more options (sorry ChiefSlapAHo), but feel free to write in a vote.

Edit:  I did include Jeep, didn't I?

How does this tow?? My brother has a 1981 Class C with the same drivetrain. He is looking to get a new one in a year or so. This one only has about 41,000 miles on it. His is a honey.

Also, what is your average temp on the highway? He is at 210 with the AC off. This is in texas heat also.

I've put 6000 miles plus on it this summer, including long 6% grades in Tennessee (May) and 105+ degree dry heat in South Dakota (July). Hottest tranny temp was 230 in SD for a VERY short time, 2 mile 10% grade coming out of Rapid City to the campground. All highway time (75 mph), the tranny never ran over 210, usually in the 190-200 range. Engine temps generally sit with the needle straight up or slightly above, no "true" gauge in there tho. Oil pressure always runs 1/2 to 2/3 on the gauge.

I run dual external trans coolers with the in-radiator one. The AC doesn't work, so not sure how that will effect everything. We have run with the generator going and the roof air on tho ;)

Fully loaded for a trip, 18,000#. PHAT. Use a weight dist hitch, add a rear sway bar or airbags, and go for it. Mine will be making a 1400 mile trip to Moab in May... I run Equal in the front tires, it does 85 no problem, but it's most comfortable in the 70-75 range.

Mileage full loaded is in the low 7's. VERY acceptable IMO.

That looks exactly like my brothers except he's got a kick ass color scheme. Where the single brown stripe is on your he has tan, brown, yellow, and orange!!!! We just got done putting in a new 4 core radiator and new tranny cooler lines. Tonight we are pulling of the exaust manifolds to try to fix an exhaust leak.

The AC doesn't work in his either. Cracks me up though, it has a york compressor. Makes me want to OBA the RV..... I need help

Drivers side? Mine leads like a bastard....and has for 4 years!! I've got one bolt busted on the manifold already, so planning to pull the motor entirely, pull both manifolds, and drop in some Thorley's and copper gaskets. $500 for parts, but outta quiet it down a ton plus boost the power a tad....

Let me know how your manifold project goes...and don't say I didn't warn you!!!

Haven't actually got to tow with it yet, but based on the engine and braking performance with it empty it should do much better than my old '01 Dodge Ram 1500 ;)

I don't tow enough to justify the $5K diesel upgrade, plus I actually like the gasser for empty daily driving. Currently getting about 15-16 mpg.

Ben

I have a heavy foot, get around 8-10 in town 13-15 hwy empty.
I get 8-10 pulling 22' trailer with a overweight comanche. I have gotten 13 pulling on the flats, but most of where I pull is hills. The AC is always on too. My old half ton chevy got better gas mileage unloaded, but only managed around 6-8 loaded. The v-10 gets much better mpg pulling. There isn't that much of a drop between loaded and unloaded. If you can find a 5spd with 30,000 miles you should concider getting it. Plan on trading it in before 100,000 though. I have "read" that the v10's don't live much longer than that.

The problems that I have come up with so far is the weight differance between load and the Slut. It handles fine with this setup however a longer wheelbase would really solve the problem..

The solution? Utility 20.. Ford F-250 frame, front clip and cab from a J-10, finally a Utility bed with all the goodies to fix a trail rig. This will become a very versatile unit to not only tow your rig to the trail but to go and recover it after a break. Plans are a fresh 401, T-18/208 with the stock 60 rear and HP 44 front. Work has already begun :D

For needed power I use my 77 suburban 454 built 400 and one ton diffs and springs. If I'm doing distance and require comfort it's the 91 suburban 3/4 ton 350/4l80e/241/14bolt 4x4 with over 300 km's on the clock and not one leak front to back.Got 14MPG(imperial not US) towing 7000lbs to Cali and cruised at 70-80mph the whole way.Temp guage rose three times and the clutch fan kicked in and brought it back down in seconds.Haven't tried the new truck 2000 3500 Savanna van with 350 and full tow package.Seats twelve for the economical road hauler. It has front and rear A/C as well for the southern heat if we get back down there.
