Has anyone actually seen one in use, or used one yourself? I saw an ad for one from Rosser Jeep for $399 - seems like they are trying to lowball the market to get their foot in the door...

Spare me your assumtions, or speculations, I woud like to hear first (or possibly second) hand informaiton only.... :)

David,

My Dad just bought the 12K Milemarker for his Duramax 4x4. We used it the other day to pull out out Case 550 Long Track Dozer that was stuck pretty bad.

I did not think it had a prayer of pulling it out, but it really rid an amazing job! Stout as hell.

I had not used a hydo winch since I was stationed in Germany in the early 90's.

THe only problem I see with these in the type of wheeling I do is that they only work with the engine running and after a rollover that is not always a luxury you have.

Quality materials and fit and finish on the 12,000.

FYI

Thanks for the comments on the hydro winch, but I was looking for info on their new electric model. Still, if they hold true through their entire line, I don't see why the electric winch should not be just as good :)

I called mile marker and here are the stats: 8000 lbs, 2.5 hp motor, 3 stage planetary gear set, 100 ft of 3/8 cable, it weighs 80 lbs and the guy was unsure on what the gear ratio was? I' ll post it later. The motor sounds a little small to me.

Rumor has it that its a rebadged Chinese built winch, much like the ones you can buy from Harbor Freight or Chicago Tool.

Enough with the damn rumors !!!

I bought 1 and will be sure post back when i get it. They will be shipping them min January. (pre-order deal)

As far as having less HP. Great !!! That means it draws less amps, and I get to worry about other things.

For $399 its got to be faster than my $20 4 ton come-a-long!

fwiw: I did get a form reply from them when i emailed them about all the BS being posted. Plus they were quoted as replying to another person on the JU forum as saying "they are NOT relabled ramsey's"

Who cares!

On thier www.winchtest.com they did several test on the warn 9k winchs and found many pull broke the 5/16 cable and the site shows some math to supprt that the cable is in the marginal safty area when the diameter (wrap) of the drum is factored into the limits of the cable.

SO thats why they are putting a 3/8" on their new E8000.....

We shall see !!!!

Posted this over at JU, thought it might apply here:

"Just something to think about:

Milemarker is putting 3/8 rope on a 2.5in drum pin. This gives you a drum to rope ratio below 8 (this is the SAE spec for winches) and drops the wire rope breaking strength to about 11,700 lbs (this is not exact, but pretty close using the math off of www.winchtest.com ). They use this on all their winches including the 10 and 12 thousand pound winches (hows that for safety margins).

But that aside lets look at couple different issues:

1. Have you ever worked with 3/8 rope? It is heavy and not very flexable. Try dragging this stuff up a 100 ft tall hill a few times and you will see what I mean.

2. Those of you with Milemarker winches; have you ever spooled all of the rope off of the drum? How did you like the tangled up ball of crap the first layer turns into once it is off of the drum? I know I wouldnt. 3/8 wire rope just is not meant to be pulled around a 2.5in pin.

Warn, Ramsey and Superwinch all use 5/16 wire rope on their small winches. Why? Because it is a good compromise between strength, flexability, and weight for the occasional winch user. If you are really worried about safety, buy an 8274 and put 3/8 synthetic rope on it. It has 3.5 in drum which will give you a 9.333 drum to wire rope ratio with 3/8 (11.2 with 5/16), no brake drum heat to worry about, and is about the most reliable winch you can buy. Sure it is a grand to buy one, it can block the radiator, and it weighs 136 lbs (with regular wire rope), but you wanted safe right??????????

Just my .02"

The 3/8 rope thing is a marketing ploy by playing on peoples fears (ie Milemarkers thing about wire rope on www.winchtest.com ).

Mile Marker $399 + $20 shipping, then roller fairlead $60 for a total of $479

Ramsey rep 8000 $499 + $7 shipping, comes with roller fairlead for a total $506

Difference of $ 27 and Summit can have it to you in 2-3 days not 3-4 weeks.

The Ramsey is from Summit Racing , and the shipping is for anywhere in us I think.

The Ramsey has lighter cable, more hp motor, and has been around alot longer. So parts and service ( if needed ) should be easier to get.
