: 96 FJ80 tranny

I found a 96 FJZ80 and have a question about the tranny. I have read that it is the same as the one in a 4Runner. SO - has anyone broke one? While this will not be a hard core trail rig, I am planning OME lift and 35" tires (some harder wheeling is to be expected with factory lockers).

What to expect? Will this tranny stand up hard wheeling and day driver useage?

I wheeled mine for 2 years and towed my FJ-40 for a total of 22K miles of the 4K I put on it, sold it with 110K and never had a single problem with mine.

The vehicle was totally abused before I got it.

More than likely. It's the same as the one in the 4Runner, but similar. Definitely smaller than the A442F/A440F in the earlier rigs, but that doesn't seem to have affected its strength.

FYI you're going to need more than an OME lift to run 35's if you're wheeling the rig.

I was told that the "taller" OME's and a coil spacer would yield enough lift to stuff 35's under it. Am I misinformed? I hope to take this truck to Moab this spring. Probably won't see the Rubicon or anything like that (yet - my FJ40 has been built for the rocks and doesn't mind a little rock rash).

If 35's won't fit, what will? What other lift will get 35's under the FJZ80?

Nolen - why did you sell your '96? Problems? For as much as the FJZ80's cost, I want to make sure I'm getting something I'll like and enjoy. If it were not for practicality, I'd probably keep my roadster, but with 2 kids a 2-seater is a PITA if not unuseable.

This truck is pretty nice - I'm stoked to possibly be trading my roadster for a REAL day driver :cool2: :D

I ran 35" tires with OME Heavy fronts and OME med in the rear. I added 1.5" coil spacers from Sleeoffroad.

You can get away with good rad manners by only installing the OME caster bushings. I had the Outback arms, but for 1.5" spacers, I think that is unneccessary.

I sold my FZJ-80 so I could fund some projects on my FJ-40 and I needed a real tow vehicle. My '80 towed as good as a 1/2 ton truck, but that is not what I need.

Off Road, you will be FLOORED with the capabilities of an FZJ-80. I would LOVE to have another one. Go to my Moab Album in my photopoint site and you will see lots of FZJ-80 shots.

GO for it, make sure you find one with the Electric Lockers.
