So I got an 8" Tuffy console for my 23rd (well, the order receipt; it comes this week). Anyone have any ideas on how to adapt it into a 62 while accomodating the rear heater?

I have been looking at doing the same thing in my 62. Although I thought the only way to do it was to cap off the rear heater. Let me know if you figure out how to do it.

I know Henry (60seriesguy) has done it in his 62. I popped off an email to him asking about it. Hopefully he can provide pics :D

Can you cut out a part of the back for the vent and make a false bottom to cover the ducting?

I'm not sure. I'll have a better idea of what to do when I get it though. If I figure it out, I'll post pics.

If you have some drawings of the heater it might help you out a bit. Check Specters site, they'yr good for that kind of stuff;)

I've already got my factory console out and I've been eyeballing that :p

I'm thinking I might be able to cut off part of the back and then replace it with the plastic back that has the vents and heater control on it. Probably be nice to put on a false bottom if necessary, but I'll see when I get the console.

A friend of mine got a Tuffy for his FJ40.
He said it was built like a safe.
You should like it. :D

That's why I wanted one. That and it gives me a place to mount a CB if I can find a DIN sized one (or at least adapters to fit a small one into a DIN sized opening).

They are actually made from pretty thin steel. I have the 12 inch wide version in my '59 LR and I think it would take somebody with a crowbar about 30 seconds to rip it to shreds. The tabs for the locks tend to wear and fail leaving you locked out of your own console. This happened to me on my tuffy rear drawer and I had to break into it (which didnt take long!) Better than plastic tho.

I've had a Tuffy in my Fj62 (8" wide, no separate stereo compartment) for about 5 years and it's been one of the best interior modifications I've ever done. About three times the storage of the original console, somewhat more secure, comfy armrest for the highway and *real* (as in Big Gulp real) cupholders.

But my truck won't be of any help, my FJ62 is tropical-spec so it didn't have a rear heater stock. It has one now, but I installed an FJ60 under-the-seat rear heater, not the center-console FJ62 model.

*YEARS* ago I saw a really sweet Canadian FJ62 at the big Cruiser swap meet in Virginia (I'm thinking like 1996) and the guy had modified the rear mounting plate of the Tuffy console (the one that looks like a triangle and bolts under the console) to accept the slots for the heater controls, then mounted the Tuffy above the heater. Pretty clean, pretty trick install, the Tuffy ended up a little higher than on mine, but that may even work to some people's advantage. I was very impressed but at the time my photography skills were pretty basic and I never thought of taking real close-up shots. I've regretted it ever since, this is a topic that comes up fairly frequently.

Good luck, Dan, enjoy your console and happy belated b-day!

the easist option is to loose the rear heater, really don't need it in WA. I did this on my fj40...(heater was mounted under console)

2nd idea is to get a fj60 heater and mount in under the passanger seat(stock fj60 location) .....oh Henry mentioned this...

when you decide what to do, when mounting it try to move it as far to the pasanger side as possible otherwise it feels kinda cramped.....at least for me.

try to redrill the console and not the body when mounting it, should be able to use some stock captive nuts. Both the 40 and 60 consoles are mounted to stock holes......me no like to drill body

I weighed this option, but I could easily end up taking it to England, or in the most extreme case (in which case I WOULD finance a set of Mattrax), have it in Greenland should I get stationed there (snowfall measured in feet, OORAH!).

I second the notion of mounting it close to the passenger, gives you good clearance for the brake handle. In my case, it also gave me space for a couple of water bottle holders right behind the brake handle, which worked out great.

I used all stock hardware, I just drilled two extra holes on the bottom of the tuffy.

England climate isn't much different than WA.

Greenland......LOL, calling it green.........was Leif Eriksons marketing ploy to get people to move there.......it aint green and Iceland isn't all Ice.......crafty eh? Flew over Greenland a few years ago.......its a bigass chunk of ice!

Yes I am Husky......where are my Tuffskins?

There *was* a reason why it was called Greenland at one time-and there may be again. Welcome to the finicky world of global climate change (the natural kind that happens regardless of what man does that is).
