: stranded, Ft. Collins area

Hey all,
Having a problem with the '94 80 series while on vacation with the family in the Poudre River Canyon northwest of Ft. Collins.

After driving up the canyon, I noticed a considerable amount of coolant coming from the rear of the engine. The amount was comperable to about the size of a "pee" stream (streaming off bellhousing, but coming from above). The temp guage had not moved, and the overflow bottle still has a bit of coolant in it (however amount has dropped).

Drove back down the canyon to our campsite, and again looked under the truck. No coolant leaking. I presume the stress of driving up the mountain caused the coolant to push by a weak hose or something, and coming down was less stressful.

We need to leave CO tommorrow AM and head back to Kansas City, towing the M416. I'm not too comfortable with this idea given the situation.

I feel I need to do something about the problem.

First, is there anyone in the Ft. Collins area that has work space? (Brian S., I am a member of the CAC but don't have a printout w/ me).

Could BARS leak be an option to get me back to KC?

Is the "Pesky Heater Hose" on the drivers side rear of the engine (that's where the coolant seems to be coming from).

What size hose is the PHH so that I might be able to source a replacement if this is the problem?

If I can't find a place to do this myself today, is there a shop in the Ft. Collins area that might be open on a holiday weekend (ha, ha)?

Any chance Slee Offroad does work on holiday weekends?

Is Toyota Red coolant compatible with other red coolants? I don't have any spare Toy coolant w/ me, and I'd assume the dealerships are closed.

Anyone have Toyota Red that is in this area?

Any ideas or suggestions on my dilemma?

Lastly, could someone forward this to the LCML and the 80sCool list?

Also, since I am away from home, please reply direct to me at this address only: eanders6@stumail.jccc.net

Thanks for the help....

I sent you the CAC list from Colorado. I'd try Floyd as he is in the Ft. Collins area. I highlighted the Ft. Collins folks in red. I'll try emailing them with your info for you.

I'd mix the reds, avoid the Bar X as it won't do any good if it is a hose, and look at hose clamps vs. hose replacement right away. Wal Mart will have the antifreeze and hose clamps and will most likely be open today. Depending upon where you think the leak is you might be able to plug it off higher and fix it when you get home. Obviously you don't really need heat right now.

good luck!

The PHH is on the driver's side, above and behind the starter. Sounds like you found the limit of it's life expectancy. :(

You can do it as a trail side repair, but it really ain't fun. The hose is a 5/8. High temp silicone is best. For an emergency repair, I think I would bypass the metal hose and run from the block to the heater junction above the intake on the firewall. Some folks have done this as a perminant repair.

If you're going through the trouble of replacing those PIA clamps, you might as well replace the hose.

I doubt Bars Leak would help this situation. It's OK for heater cores, radiators and gasket leaks, but not really for a hose leak. In fact, I wouldn't use it at all on a vehicle I wanted to keep.

The short story is that Todd was right, it was the PHH.

Since I wasn't really interested in spending my vacation doing a road side fix while my GF and 2 kids looked on, nor stranding them at a listers house while I did the fix, we limped it to Slee's and he took care of it first thing Tues morning.

Big thanks to everyone that offered their pad, cross posted the message, sent copies of the CAC list, etc.

And even bigger thanks who Christo (and Robbie, all though I didn't get to talk with him at all), who really went the extra mile to help us out.

We're home now, and owe everyone a big "thank you".

See ya
