Is the pump always supposed to be on? Is it supposed to be loud?

Yes it's always on and they have a reputation for being loud.

Cool, thanks for the reply. Not only is the pump loud but the fuel return line makes it sound like someone is peeing in my gas tank.

I used to have a projection in my 78 corvette with the pump mounted right at the back and it was LOUD. I cut the noise in half by using the "insulated mount kit" they offered for it(this was 6 years ago). Basically just thick rubber mounts inbetween the pump and frame. you might already have this, if not give it a try it works!!. oh yeah it is always on too.

My pro-jection pump is very loud(whinny) as well, but it really did'nt seem to get that loud until is turned down the fuel to like 14psi.

I could be wrong but I believe mine shuts off as soon as it hits whatever pressure (16psi) that it wants to achive. I cant hear it as soon as I start my engine though so I cant tell you that <IMG SRC="smilies/biggrin.gif" border="0">

Originally I only had 9.7V at the pump. When I checked the hot wire with a frame ground instead of through the harness it was 12.7V. I grounded the pump ground directly to the frame instead of through the wiring harness otherwise the pump wasn't turning on at all. When I turn the ignition key to 'on' (motor off) the pump runs continuously and I can hear fuel dumping into the gas tank. The manual says it is supposed to shut off after a few seconds. It does run fine and I've tuned it fairly well with the exception of mashing the pedal to the floor which results in some sputtering.

what do you think about useing a pump
from pick and pull from a larg v8 engine?

As the manual states, it requires two wires to the pump unless you activate a relay then ground the pump...sounds to me like you don't have the relay and the 9.6V you get through the circuit indicates you should. Just use a simple relay then pull power to the pump...mine works great...The unit "Black Box" as Holley calls it pulses the ground to control the pump, ie...when you ground it it stays on all the time....

AS for the noise problem I took an old mud flap and attached it to the body and then attached the pump to the mud flap. This greatly reduced the noise. My computer fuel pump control circuit blew years ago so I too run a wire straight to the frame from the pump and the pump runs as long as the ignition circuit is powered. benn that way for 5 years and I haven't noticed any problems yet.

sah-wheat! that is what I wanted to hear. I bought this unit used so I have no idea of the condition of the ECU. It's probably messed up if it's only giving me 9.7V with no load on it. I'm not buying a new ECU if I don't have to. Thanks.
