: What to throw out & what to keep on a CJ

Help me out here. I know what needs to be done on this CJ except for the suspension. It is going to be our strictly off road jeep. Will be trailered as most of the creature comforts have ben gutted. It has winshield wipers...That is about it. Biggest problem is the suspension rides like a worn out log truck and feels like it will flip on a curb. No flex, if you dont have your harness on it will throw you out.

We bought this as a semi finished project and it has a few good points.

Very good tub, rebuilt engine 258 with Clifford intake and headers with Holley 4bl. Auto tranny. Gearing unknown but low,,,It creeps so bad you have to shift to N to stop it.

1. Thornbirds are going first thing. Then what to do with the suspension.

2. Axles will stay till we break em.

GET ME SOME FLEX and TURNING.

I am going to the shop to work on the Clifford Valve cover leak today so I can take more pics if needed.

Rear with "homemade?" traction bars?

Thanks in advance.

Oh yea,,We will be using this at Barnwell Mtn so it will be trails and rocks.

Thanks

The first thing I would do is cut the "traction bar" off. The cj is spring under, so axelwrap shouldn't be a big problem. The leaf packs appear to be 7 leafs, so they should have some flex. You say it feels like a worn-out truck. That makes me think is has too much flex(body roll). If you really think the problem is spring related, get some new ones. Have you run it at Barnwell yet? Get out there and try it out. Barnwell has some tame trails for testing.

Leave it like it is till you round up D60's/14 bolt. Then go spring-under or coils.

Talk to the guys at jeeps of North Texas

go with waggy springs.

Thanks,,,The waggy springs are a good idea cause I am picking up a parts one to finish my 65 Waggy and it doesnt need springs.

Now,,,,anybody ever dealt with a leaking Clifford alum. valve cover?

I read about the intake exhaust problems, but they seem to be mounted fine, but the cover just blows out oil.

Worked on the wiring problems yesterday, the thing was a rolling fire waiting to happen., melted connectors grounded to frame, dried duct tape on 12v pos wires, cut wires just dangling with no ends. Now the headlights work with the engine running!!

Might order a painless harness to clean things up.

Thanks

The clifford covers have always worked for me until...you don't want to hear this...my rigs went bad and I had such terrible blow-by that it created pressure in the oil chamber and the oil just blew out of the valve cover and distributor seal. Hope this isn't your problem.
