: Tow Rig Gas Mileage
Jason R 09-01-2003, 02:46 PM Just want to see what you guys get while towing. How about hauled weight, type of truck/motor, and obviously MPG.
I am mainly looking for diesels towing around 4k, but any figure would be helpful. If any mods are done (lift, banks stuff etc.) be sure to list it.
SanDiegoCJ 09-01-2003, 04:06 PM 2003 Dodge Quadcab 3500 dualie with a CTD and 5sp. and 4.10 gears. All stock.
I'm getting appx. 15mpg right now, but it's almost brand new. Should get better as it breaks in.
smurfsdad 09-01-2003, 06:54 PM Only checked it once towing, 7,000 lb gooseneck with FJ40 minus engine across Nevada at 75 mph with ac on 11 mpg. Truck is 97 reg cab F350 4wd stock with 3.55 axle and 5spd. I considered that to be above average for it so i must have been steady with the throttle and got some good fuel. There are just to many variables with fuel, road, wind, etc.
tators 09-01-2003, 07:04 PM just got back from Tellico....
On the way out I got about 11mpg (sorry DRM .. didn't log it, just filled up at the Tellico Pride Station, noted the miles and did some quick math in my head)
Halfway there I ran across some scales at a truck stop...
I was at 16000lbs exactly....
01 F250 PSD 4wd 6spd 3.73 gears
Seeing Red 09-02-2003, 07:06 AM Not exactly the type you're looking for, but here's my 1/2 ton. Info in sig:
Empty
Flat ground, cruise on 70 mph: 20 mpg
Hilly, windy, or stop and go: 18ish mpg
Loaded with Jeep and Trailer in Sig
Flat ground, cuise on 70, 3rd gear: 15mpg
Hilly, cruise on 65: 13 to 14 mpg
Mountains with stop and go, steep grades: varies 11 to 15mpg
The 1/2 ton does ok, but if I were to do much towing on steep grades or travel cross country loaded, I would want a 3/4 ton diesel.
sceep 09-02-2003, 10:39 AM Ford f900 semi with CAT 6 cyl deisel. 7mpg empty @26k#'s, or 7mpg loaded @ 65k+ #'s. :D
Chaz Murray 09-02-2003, 11:14 AM 2000 F-250 PSD From lodi to sand mt. up and over HWY 88 towing a jeep, quad and camping gear..oh yea..and a coffen ice chest loaded down with lots-o-beer i got 9.89 mpg there and 10.something on the way back..but i was doin 70mph most of the way so the mileage was in the crapper
Haole 09-02-2003, 02:03 PM Flat towing a TJ, 15 mpg at 55mph. 7.3L PSD CC Dually.
I have run from Denver to Moab twice with 8000 lbs. of trailer and Jeep in tow.
At 65 mph I got 16 mpg
At 90+ mph (2nd trip) 10 mpg
Truck is a 3/4 '02 2500HD Duramax, Reg. cab, 4wd, 6 speed. 1st run was with all stock. 2nd run had 4" exhaust on truck and two mountain bikes on roof of truck.

You're asking for "GAS" mileage but then ask for people running DIESEL rigs to answer. My DIESEL powered truck gets 0.0 miles per gallon of GAS. Anyone running gasoline in their diesel powered truck is asking for it to blow up unless it's a "multi-fuel engine.
Tusker 09-02-2003, 07:21 PM I get as high as 16.5 mpg towing a two-horse trailer (4,000 lbs +-) on flat ground at 65 and down to around 11 mpg with a camper and car trailer combo that weigh around 10,000 lbs.
Truck is a 96 psd with 3.55's, a mild chip, improved air filtration and modified exhaust.
Supergper 09-02-2003, 09:30 PM I am getting 15mpg in my 99 F350 PSD 6 speed 3.73 gears supercab while towing 4K-5K...
Jason R 09-03-2003, 01:08 AM Wow I was expecting more like 17-18, but what most of you guys are getting is not bad at all. :D
Devil Dog 09-03-2003, 04:56 AM 1999 F250 CC PSD towing 6500 pounds of trailer and jeep... i get about 14 MPG at 70 MPH... 4.10 gears 6 speed manual..
guinea13 09-03-2003, 07:31 AM 2001 F-250 PSD, 6spd, 3.73 gears towing 6k gets about 12mpg. Not towing about 16mpg (if I am lucky). I use to get 16 towing and 21 not towing. Don't know why it changed?
daren's tJ 09-03-2003, 10:35 AM I get around 10 with the motor home. It is 27' and runs a 460. Doesn't seem to care if the Jeep is there or not. I flat tow the Jeep.
Rob Kosinski 09-03-2003, 04:32 PM I get around 9-10 mpg towing with a 2003 F-250 V10, 6speed, 4:30 gears. This is towing at 70-80mph with the AC on. Unloaded I get around 12-14mpg if I drive gingerly. The V10 is such an animal its hard to drive mellow.

wthomas 09-04-2003, 05:52 PM I flat tow my Jeep (around 4,000lbs) with a 98 Dodge 2500 CTD 4x4, 5speed, 3.55 gears, average speed of 65-70 mph and I get about 16-16.5mpg. Also have an Edge EZ.
scoutkid 09-05-2003, 12:39 PM havn't had the chance to tow the scout yet, but around town and on the highway empty im logging 15 around town and 16.5 on highway, 97PSD EC
oldjeep 09-05-2003, 01:17 PM 2002 F150 5.4 Auto with 3.73's
19 MPG Hwy
12 MPG pulling 5000lbs
'03 Dmax ~ 10,000 miles on it. Trailer and jeep weigh in around 4k, probably a little more. 3.73 gears, stock motor, stock everything actually. Allison (auto) tranny. Approximately 1000' above sea level.
Highway unloaded ~ 20 mpg
City unloaded ~ 16-18 mpg
Highway loaded ~ 12-15 mpg
I typically cruise 5-10 mph over the speed limit whether loaded or not, and I try to accelerate gradually to conserve fuel.

have you weighed your Jeep?? I am pretty sure a stock jeep curb weigth is between 3200-4000...and I bet your trailer is atleast 1500...your prolly towing more weight than you think...
Well in my bran new 4000 mile.
2003 Chev standard cab 6 speed manual 4x4 long bed
With a ton of tools in it, and a hard cover on the bed.
Towing my jeep on a trailer... Towing weight = 6000lbs
From Pittsburgh to Denver
PA-Ohio @ 80mph With Air 6th Gear Cruise control= 18.5mpg
Ohio line to indy 80 mph air, windows open= 17mph
indy to somwhere in Kanasssss 15mph speed the same
coming home windshild to jeep was folded down doors off seats reclined = 17 mpg then 19mpg as we got closer to home.
Altitude makes a big diffrence as did wind. Tail wind comin home, and down hill.
no mods at all.... Yet...
Can you say BANKS? 4 inch Engine brake, cool air intake system, and chip? $2600.00 plus tax and shipping... :)
Saving my change as we speak. :D
Total cost for fuel from PGH to DENVER and home $300.00+ a little.
XXL 55 09-05-2003, 05:16 PM 2002 FORD F350 (Thats a 1 Ton for you non Ford people) 4X4
7.3 Turbo Diesel
Around town I average 15 to 17 mpg
Highway 17-20mpg Average speed between 70 and 80 mph.
jasonmt 09-05-2003, 06:24 PM I am averaging about 14L/100km (that’s about 17MPG in imperial) in mine. Specs: 2002 F-550 Powerstroke/6 spd combo 4x4 Reg. cab, weighs in between 16000# to 18,000#. 4.88 gears, 36" tires, dyno'ed at just over 300hp/675tq. BUT before anybody jumps on these figures, it is set up as a welding truck so I HAVE to have a commercial license, insurance and a TDG (Transportation of Dangerous Goods) endorsement. The fines involved now with speeding/unsafe driving are $$$ so I drive like an old man in the truck.

You're probably right. I haven't weighed it yet, and come to think of it, I had a bunch of gear in the bed as well (tools, spares, camping gear, etc.). So, I wouldn't be surprised if I was up over 6k easily.
I tow with a 01 Dodge Ram 2500 Cummings long bed.The truck is stock. With a CJ-7 on a 16 ft. trailer on flat ground, looking at about 15-17 MPG. in OD.
