Ok, I read the 14 bolt article.. It mentioned that some 14ff came with a stock locking dif.. But when I check juck yards and things like that, some say posi and some say locked (I know the difference) but the juckyard people dont seem to. Was there really an option for an acual locked diff for a truck with a 14ff? or are they calling posi locked?

The only civilian option available that I know of is the Gov-lock locking differential. It's really more of a limited slip and definitely not a true "locker" like a Detroit. The Gov-lock usually does not have a very good reputation.
The military versions of the Chevy pickup built back in the mid-80's had a 4.56 geared 14FF rear axle with a Detroit locker.

The older trucks (78 and older I think) had an Eaton posi, before Gm came out with the grenade lock. I guess these are ok for offroad, but not so good for rocks and such. Haven't heard much aboutu them.

The confusion starts at the dealer lot.... those price stickers with all the options listed often say "G80 Locking rear differential" or something very similar. The dealer's parts counter uses the same language cuz its what it says when they look it up in their computers  The wrecking yards adopt the same language if they want to sell their parts to the dealers
