Ok so what is the Tranny to have behind the Powerstroke? Auto or 6spd? I've heard about problems with the auto. Only going to be towing as much as my TJ

Thanks, Phil

I don't know which one to get, but I can tell you we just replaced the auto behind our '99 turbo powerstroke with 150,000 on it

Auto is ok if you add cooling to it for towing. 99 had a problem with this. A tranny cooler is about $100. IF you like shifting alot get the stick.

I have the auto, and it pulls great. I've heard the stick is great till you have to replace the pressure plate because it is built on to the flywheel not bolted, so you would have to replace the hole thing.
That is just what someone told me I do not know for sure.

Ive heard the auto's birn up pretty easy but thats just from word of mouth.

How would that work, seems like you wouldnt be able to get a cluth between the two if that was true

it's not correct info. the new trucks (99 on up) have a conventional style flywheel and clutch. the older trucks (87 with a 5 speed to 97) had what whas called a "dual mass flywheel", it was made of 2 pieces, with an elastomer damping material between them. these were a non serviceable item, because if they got hot enough to require turning the elastomer was toast, and wouldn't do it's job. new flywheels ran about $1200 for them, but now LUK makes a replacement clutch assembly that uses a conventional clutch like the newer trucks.

DSi,
Even if the HP and peak torque values are the same, a diesel will thrash an auto worse than a gas motor because they make that power at lower RPMs. Most cross platform autos are designed to slip at speeds that the diesels start making peak torque. The only good auto for a diesel is one that was designed for a diesel, like the alison.
