Hi there,
This will probably be an easy question. My 76 FJ40 starts up ok, Idles OK but when I try to go up the driveway it sputters and stuff. It is a new carb and has only been adjusted to "sound good" But I need to get it running better so I can drive it down to the local shop for fine tuning and smog test.
Thanks

did it run good before the new carb, or did it do the same thing. could be alot of things. vacuum leak possibly, Mine kinda did this when it had a blown head gasket. when is the last time you tuned it up. Is it the original motor?

Well in a nut shell... The engine was replaced along with almost everything else, i.e. carb, alt, bat, headers, entire smog system starter... The 76 FJ was sold to me with mostly 68 - 75 parts in a 76 frame and vin. (I was unaware at the time 8 years ago) The carb is now a replacement Holly carb. I know "why a holly?" The price was right and Im learning as I go... <IMG SRC="smilies/rolleyes.gif" border="0"> So no, it has never been tuned up, It has gotten this far by me, and I know nothing about cars. Learning as I go. It has run around the block fine before, then I started tweaking the timing and the carb and now this. I was hoping that some one could say "its too rich" OR "up the idle, that should get you there" A temporary fix for the 2 mile journey to get it adjusted and smoged.
Thanks

Check your float level. Not sure on a Holly, but on the standard Aisen there is a site glass you can look through. When you go up the hill, you may be starving the carb.
no gas = no go.
