: How much windshield is required, for driving on the street?
KingOf_Pain 09-03-2003, 11:05 AM I was just wondering if you could run a 8" tall strip of lexan across the windshield opening in a buggy, and call it street legal?
Anyone know the specific requirements of a windshield?
Thanks,
MattS 09-03-2003, 11:08 AM Where? I'm sure it's not the same in every state. ;)
GloNDark 09-03-2003, 11:17 AM In NV it's a clear field of vision. Nothing about a "windshield" :D i got away without one for months.

so are you saying that you FINALLY got busted for not having one??
sceep 09-03-2003, 11:36 AM none at all in NM as long as you are wearing proper eye protection.
Rubicrawler 09-03-2003, 11:50 AM Depends on your state. In California, you need one. Here's a link that might help those in cali http://www.dmv.ca.gov/pubs/vctop/d12/vc26700.htm
and more info:

welndmn 09-03-2003, 12:15 PM he is in CA,
I don't run one either on mine.
I do wear a motorcycle helmet (keeps the bugs out my face) and live right next to the police station and never been stoped for it

BAHAHAHAHAHHA.......PICS :flipoff2:
gunracer1 09-03-2003, 12:25 PM texas is also clear field of view, but you do need a mini windsheild to put the stickers on.
KingOf_Pain 09-03-2003, 12:41 PM Thanks Mark, I updated my location to include CA. I would also like to see pics of what your running on the street here in CA. I could handle goggles, and a shorty windshield.
It's probably a bad idea, but I would like to use EB license plates on the buggy, just for those sections of county roads you hit up in the mountains. The green sticker just seems too limited.

Stickers? Don't confuse the newbs, man. Your gonna have newbies all over the country putting :rainbow: stickers on motorcycle helmets, and then they're really gonna suck start seized harleys when they get behind the wheel. You though it was bad to drive behind a newb before, you just wait until you get behind one who cannot see at all, and has an inflated ego because he has the entire 'It's a jeep thing' sticker on his helmet visor...

what about windshield wipers? i guess if you don't hvae a windshield you wouldn't need them but i know if they don't work you can't get it inspected.
This all seems simple but is really great because i would love to take off my windshield, but still want to be legal

OIC... My mistake. I've never heard of a sticker showing you've passed inspections. The only inspections that you need here in Lewis County WA is that the vehicle is deemed street legal by the WA ST patrol. But they dont give you a sticker, they just won't give you registration or license plates if you need them. And that is only if your vehicle has never been licensed in WA already. When I bought my 3A, it was licensed and inspected by the staties already, so AFAIK, I can pretty much do anything I want modification-wise and not go through another inspection unless I was to remove the VIN number or loose the registration or something. If I lived in King County or Pierce County, I would have to pass an emissions test every year, but since I live in rural Lewis County, I get away with emissions murder. :D

Only till Mr state patrol officer puts his foot up your ass for no Cat ....go read the WAC's and see what it will cost ya...
WA dosen't require state wide safety inspections many states do....
Scott@Rockstomper 09-03-2003, 03:00 PM Colorado requires wipers but no windshield, as long as you have appropriate eye protection.
A buddy got busted on the no-wipers thing, the cop was gonna write him for no windshield and no fenders, but the buddy reminded him that there's no law on either.
So the cop wrote it for no wipers, and it stuck (he took it to court).
Shouldn'a told the cop that the windshield 'n' fenders weren't on the books, it's pretty easy to beat a ticket written for breaking a law that doesn't exist. :p
I have a windshield but I fold it down right now as it was hot. Is
that legal to drive around with as long as I wear glasses? in CA
btw.

Not quite right
This is what Wash. St says
"RCW 46.37.410
Windshields required, exception -- Must be unobstructed and equipped with wipers.
(1) All motor vehicles operated on the public highways of this state shall be equipped with a front windshield manufactured of safety glazing materials for use in motor vehicles in accordance with RCW 46.37.430, except, however, on such vehicles not so equipped or where windshields are not in use, the operators of such vehicles shall wear glasses, goggles, or face shields pursuant to RCW 46.37.530(1)(b)."
Right out of the Motor Vehicle Laws....09
ForestCam 09-03-2003, 03:47 PM except, however, on such vehicles not so equipped or where windshields are not in use
That makes total sense!
Same here in MI, no windshield but you gotta have wipers.

Interesting... must have it, except if it doesn't have one.
No Lexan or similar in WA either, then, since it isn't "safety glazing material".
I was also under the impression that motorcycle helmets weren't allowed to be worn in passenger cars on the street, on the basis of that they restrict hearing and vision. Interesting counterargument from the non-helmet-desiring motorcycle crowd when they turn that one around and argue against having to wear one on the same basis that most states won't allow car drivers to wear them. Maybe I'm misunderstanding things there tho.
bent70 09-03-2003, 05:10 PM Is the buggy going to be a trailered still? If so you can make a full lexan windshield and mount it with dzuz sp? fasteners. When your on trails for non- greensticker vehicals you can keep it on and take it off whenever you want and throw it in the tow rig.

Scott I dont think he quoted everything.. But I didnt go look at the WAC's either... the reason I say this, is WA state is very restrictive and detailed in the WAC's but they have a considerable amount of loop holes for the antique vehicle crowd.. like fender laws... they are quite restrictive unless your rig is 40 plus in age or didnt come stock with fenders...
Ed A. Stevens 09-03-2003, 07:56 PM How an Attorney intreprets the Code:
Windshields required, exception --
(1) All motor vehicles operated on the public highways of this state shall be equipped with a front windshield <snip> except, however, on such vehicles <snip> where windshields are not in use, the operators of such vehicles shall wear glasses, goggles, or face shields pursuant to RCW 46.37.530(1)(b)."
Wear a face shield or goggles and you are technically legal, but you will have to go to court to challenge the LEO's intrepretation if they site you for failure to have a windshield.
A cut down windshield must be glazed safety glass or a DOT approved equivalent to be legal (approved Lexan stock used for motorcycle farings, etc.). It must also have a functional wiper, and no tint. A cut-down Porsche Spyder windscreen is legal (it is safety glass and has a wiper).
You are "more" legal with goggles, and no "windscreening" of any kind, than with a not-DOT windshield. This was the position of the SCCA when racing a modified "street legal" Spitfire with (or without) a windscreen.
Happy Trails!
schuss 09-03-2003, 08:03 PM the main difference between car and bike helmets lies mainly in the flame retardant material used in car helmets. Since if a bike burns you get off it
Suprsizit 09-03-2003, 08:45 PM The RCW quoted does not say a motor cycle helmet is legal, it simply says glasses, goggles or face sheild. Not talking about antique vehicle crowd...09

Here's a link to Title 46 RCW, Motor Vehicle Laws ...09
