Ok, so i'm trying to weigh the option of buying a trialer for my rig, or building one.
usually i'd just build it, but I have the feeling buy the time I buy the steel, decking, axles, brakes, wheels etc, i'll be into it for as much as if i'd bought one.
Has anyone built their own trailer????
costs? time?

This has been dicussed many times and the numbers come out the same each time. It's not worth it to build your own.

If you have a pair of axles, spools or wire, tires and wheels, and a scrapyard full of steel laying around just taking up space - then yeah, making a trailer is probably cheaper ;)

But hey - shouldn't cost you anything to call around and put together a price sheet and see what you come up with :)

Another consideration.... even in Texas... it's a friggn' BEATING getting a home-made trailer rated for auto-hauling registered and titled. Another case of bureacracy trying to stop crime while making it PIA for the common man obeying the law. They pretty much assume since it's home-made... it's stolen and you need to prove otherwise. Lots o'fun!

FYI... try these folks:

Got a buddy who just bought one from them... pretty good prices and a decent trailer.

Thump, what kind of problem have you had getting a trailer registered as "home-made"?? I have registered several with no problem.... I even have my "factory built trailer" registered as Home-made so I dont have to get raped in registration costs, just told them at the tax office that it will only haul 2,000 pounds and they gave me a plate no questions asked. I have been stopped and checked out and cops never questioned a thing..... ran the serial # and it did not come back as stolen so that is really all they care about... hmmm

O and I have a 16 foot wood floor dual axle trailer for sale too a little beat up but hauls good with good tires sell for $500

let me know....

I aggree that it is probably not worth it for most people, however
I build my own, but only because I have access to all the suppies at a reasonable price. Axles for free for small trailers, and steel at wholesale prices through work. Another consideration is my area is all around expensive and I refuse to pay the price for comercial built stuff. Unless it's someone you know allready, you just don't cheap stuff for sale around here.

I just finished building my own. I think it all depends on what kind of trailer you want or want to build. If you you are looking for a quick and easy no frills trailer you would probably be better off buying a cheap one. If you want a nice trailer that is beefy with alot of customizing you may be better off building one.
