: What's the real deal on chips?

Will the dealer know I have one if I take it out before I go there in my PSD? Can I really expect a significant gain in power and mileage without upgrading anything else? I really only want better mileage, but a power gain would be nice, too.

I searched and found some info, but to be honest, it was kind of confusing with all the abbreviations that I haven't learned yet. It would be nice to get a listing of all the major chips, what it is they do, whether they void the warranty or not (heard some do, some don't.), what you have to do to hide them when you bring them to the dealer, and why they do/don't void the warranty.

EDIT: Oh, and also how they perform and if they're slowly killing your engine.

If you use a programmer like Hypertec, you can remove it prior to going to the dealer and they will not know. But if you get gauges (you should) they will suspect something is up.

I recently got a Diablo powerstroke predator programmer. IMO has way more features and has a built in real time diagnostic scanner that will spit out codes and operating conditions while you are driving down the road which the Hypertech won't. But if you get a chip/programmer you really should have an EGT at a bare min. to start. The Diablo stuff has a reputation of running hot but I have not had any problems. My truck has been back to the dealer once for warranty work; otherwise it is serviced at my family’s heavy duty shop. Strangely enough they get quite a bit of business from people who don't do their own maintenance but won't take it to the dealer because of their modifications. It all depends on your local dealer’s attitude to chips so ask around to see which local dealer doesn’t have a problem with chips. I did other modifications when I originally re-programmed with a Hypertech (shop one not mine) so what part the program played I cannot tell you. Have you tried www.thedieselstop.com for more reading?

Yeah, I've been there, but they're even more confusing than here. I know nothing about chips or any of these acronyms. EGT? What is that? Maybe what I need is like a beginner's manual for chips. Is there such a thing? Or maybe someone can give some links to chip manufacturers web sites? A search on Google yields a lot of different brands, most of which sound like off-brand names, but some of what I've heard are reputable brands don't have what I would think are typical brand-names anyway. I'm sure that, at this point, some of what I think are brand names are actually model names, and vice-versa. I understand a lot about the machanics of diesels themselves, but not a lot of the proper terminology I guess.

This page has a older chip "shootout" and links to many of the different mainstream manufactuers: http://www.thedieselstop.com/contents/getitems.php3?Part%201%20-%20Paducah%20Dyno%20Test

EGT stands for exhaust gas temperature which you generally do not want over 1200F. Usually a chip or programmer will raise the EGT substantially and you need to go with a free flow intake and exhaust system to cool it down. I have a 4" down pipe (the section from the turbo on down to the start of the exhaust system) and a 5" exhaust on mine as well as a big cone air filter and intake system.

I know that with my chip that I put in my Dodge, I have a TON more power and throttle response. The mileage seems to be a bit better as well. I would definately recommend putting in EGT as well as boost gauges to monitor the increases. I get EGTs up to 1200-1300 pre-turbo (that makes a difference also) without a problem and I have heard that it is designed to be able to run at 1250 all day with no problem. I have also heard that 1250 consistant will smoke it. I had the gauges in before I chipped it and was pulling 1250 up a real long grade towing stock so now I can compare the numbers. My boost used to be about max @ 18-19 psi stock, 22-25 chipped, and with the Turbo Master lets it get up to 35 psi (which reduces temps). It's way worth the money if you tow or just want to bomb your truck. Mine is so damn fast unloaded it amazes me. It will also make your truck exhaust darker so smoke is inevidable(sp?). You should definately install a larger exhaust and free flowing air filter to help keep egts down.
Also, power is very addictive;) . You'll always want more, although I am very happy with the power I have now and will keep it like this for a long time.

As far as brands, check out Edge, and Superchips. Stay away from banks. They are way overpriced for what they give you. You pay for the name cause they are popular.

If you have anymore questions, feel free to pm me.
Good Luck

my buddy has a hypertech, says its not all that great, only really helps when you floor it, makes it shift way harder, and will make your governor dissapear.

I have a 2004 F-250 6.0 powerstroke with Air intake and Banks exhaust. I want know if anybody knows about the edge mileage max? Is it worth to buy it? or should I just go for the Attitude w/juice? I don't really care about power gains although it would be nice but I just want more mileage.

Don't buy the Edge shit....Get a SCT X3 programmer and call Innovative Diesel for a tune to load on it. They're where it's at for 6.0s.
