I just got a call from my wife she is on her way home from Reno, Shes driving a 94 Grand Cherokee 4.0 automatic. The check engine light is on and it will not accelerate above 50, if it does start to accelerate it dies down

voltage is good
temp is good
oil pressure drops when the it dies down after acceleration

I know this is tech but she and my kids are out in the midle of BFE.

any ideas

sounds like a plugged cat.

I had that happen to me once and it was the cat. The more I drove...the worse it got. :roxy:

Is she coming from Highway 50, Cause Alot of members live in Pollock Pines.

yup,probably got smoking hot pulling the hill and broke apart causing it to plug up.

Anyone nearby that can help her out? If you were over here, I'd be on my way!

do I need to start heading that way with a hack saw and a really long screw driver or will she make it home?

yeah,cut a notch so it can flow. probably too far for a tow?

Sorry I'm too far away to provide any real help but have her beat on the cat with the heaviest thing she can find. Same thing happened to me in my Cherocar, I was able to break enough of it up to get home. Good luck.

Got a cordless drill? If so drill 2 - 1/2" holes near the front of the cat. It'll be loud but she'll get home.

Yes. Open the exhaust infront of the cat to let the engine breath.

you will still have the check eng lite and it might run crappy from no back pressure. notch/drill so you can get home.

Fuel filter?

If I remember correctly after it cools down won't it start and run fine again until it heats back up? :roxy:

maybe EGR valve stuck. that would cause check engine light. beat on that thing till it gets unstuck too. bring a cordless reciprocating saw for the cat... get started on the project early :)

When the cat broke up on my wife's Passat I ended up having to replace the muffler to get the thing to run good again. Damn muffler weighed about 30 pounds when I got it cut loose.
Funny thing was before I replaced the cat her car would run ok 75% of the time then once and a while it wouldn't run for shit. When I cut out the cat there was 1 small piece of the honeycomb left inside that fit perfectly in the outlet, SIDEWAYS!:laughing:

where the hell is the egr valve?

the egr runs from the exhaust to the in take but doubt that is the problem look at the cat first

Ok I went out to where she was and beat the crap out of the cat, to no avail. a whole bunch of tries later I opened the air box and it started. it ran rough at times she did 35 at times she did 70, she got about 30 miles from home and it died again, messed with the air box again and it ran for about a mile. and died. That is where it sits.

any ideas still the cat maybe, fuel pump?

TPS? I had one go on my Dodge, and it when I'd try to accelerate, it would bog and die.

Might be the CPS, but I don't think it would be running at all.
