On another subject....

Anybody ever mounted a hand throttle on a LT77 or R380 equipped Defender or Disco ? Did you put it on the gear lever ? How did you run the cable and what did you hook it to on the throttle bell crank ?

It's probably not that big a deal but if someone already figured out the details, I'd rather not re-invent the wheel.

I got one from Rubicon Express and need to get it set up before a CO/UT trip in October.

tnx

Well, never mind...:D

I went home at lunch and figured out the design and mounted it up. Worked good !

If anyone is interested in seeing it, let me know.

i wouldn't mind seeing it although i'll probably never attempt such a thing.

Some details and pictures would be cool!

There are factory hand throttles for Defenders. I have one. They are OK, but designed for the right hand side driver. You can just set one up with a bicycle thumb shifter, which would make sense for the Disco. You should only need the throttle bracket which has the linkage for the main and hand throttle from a Defender. These can be bought new or used fairly cheaply.

I've got the cruise-control vacuum diaphragm hooked up to my throttle (though I don't have crusie control). I always thought an easy way to hook it up would be to remove the distributor vacuum advance and put the diaphragm's vacuum line on the tap in the manifold.

I think I did this to Paul's rig  Keeps the engine purring :D

Here's a couple of pix of the hand throttle...

The assembly came from Rubicon Express and included most every type of cable mount you would need for a custom fit.
It's simply a MT bike shifter. The cable sheath is teflon lined.

Here: http://www.rubiconexpress.com/dynamic/mainpage.asp?folderid=785

I routed the cable up along the tranny and poked it through the rubber seal on top of the gearbox tunnel. The other end is looped around the same point the throttle cable attaches to. There's another mounting hole below the throttle and cruise control mount thats probably where the hand throttle goes in a Defender. One could also use that mount but it would be more difficult to attach to the throttle bellcrank. No matter where you attach, be real sure the hand throttle cable doesn't foul anything when either the cruise control diaphragm or the normal throttle cable is doing the pulling.

I can control the revs very linear from idle to about 3500 RPM. The actuator is friction controlled and will stay at a setting once you move it - very smooth.

Will probably also be good for running a fast idle for winching or welding :)

the "genuine" LR hand throttle, that fits next to the fuse box cover, is meant for either LH or RH drive, you can get the cables for either,

they are 'supposed' to be fitted to the opposite side as the driver, so a LHD vehicle shouild have it in the RH side, to stop you using them as a crude cruise control.
