: power steering question
nuttzack 12-06-2001, 11:49 PM Hey guys I got a question for ya! I got a toyota power steering setup off an 81 celica a couple weeks back and now I am mounting it. I am currently putting 3 link up front with coils and moving axle up 10-12 inches. From what it looks like the pitman arm faces forward. This is actually the position I want it in so I dont have to mount it on the inside of my frame extensions, which probably wont be as strong as the stock frame. My question is will I be alright mounting the pitman arm in a forward position as long as it will be out of the way of any obstacles I might encounter? Did any of you guys turn the arm around on the toyota box? Should I do that instead and mount it on the inside of my frame extensions?
poppycock 12-07-2001, 01:08 AM uhh... you can't just turn the arm around. your steering would be backwards. :flipoff2: if you want the pitman facing forward you need something like a scout box. just move the box forward and mount it on your extension.
heavytlc 12-07-2001, 07:39 AM I have not done the Toyota swap but the buggy I am building is 3 link coilover up front. My front axle is 11" forward.I am using a 78 scout box, works great. The pitman arm needs to be changed,(it is 9"center to center, you need about 7" for toy mini axle)I do not know what the arms I use come off of but saginaw arms are almost all intechangeable. The steering shaft comes almost strait out and parallel to the ground.
I used the ujoint shaft off of a 87 astro van (cheap). You would have to cut the inner fender, but I am not running fenders. They do not fit real well with the front axle that far foward or with 37x12.50 any way.
You can also use an 80 something astro van box,but it mounts inside the frame and would be harder to fit.The IH box mounts outside the frame with 3 bolts and looks like it might fit with stock axles with some lift/mods.If you want to try some thing else you will need to look for a reverse rotation box.(reverse rotation = turn input clockwise, output=counterclockwise and, standard rotation dose the oppisite) I say this because I found a few boxes that had the pitman facing back but were reverse rotation.I have know idea what they came out of though.I hope this helps
nuttzack 12-07-2001, 08:31 AM Alright, the box I have has the arm mounted in the forward position already, so having the arm face farward doesn't necissitate me turning the arm or box around because it came that way off of the celica. So, with that being said I was really just wondering if anyone had run into any probs with running the arm forward? It should work out fine cause the arm on the box measures about 7 inches eye to eye.
heavytlc 12-07-2001, 09:14 AM The 7" pitman works because of the overall travel of the arm. I have know idea how far the box you have turns but, other than that you should have no problem. With the saginaw box there is no strength difference. So I would assume the same with yours. It should work good for you.You will want to make sure everything clears befor you mount it ie pitman arm arc of travel works with steeing arm.The best part is the 100deg or better aproach because the steering gear is behind the drag link not in front.
samiguy 12-07-2001, 01:37 PM nuttzack, I think you still have to move the pitman are so it is facing rear with the Celica box, try it out. Turn the input shaft clockwise (right turn), your pitman arm should turn right, if not you need you need to flip it
nuttzack 12-07-2001, 03:45 PM I'm not at home right now, so I cant check the box, but I was wondering if it is possible to just turn the arm around like what samiguy is talking about? If I was at home I would be able to look, but not so someone tell me!! Thanks

nuttzack 12-10-2001, 01:25 PM Which setup do you reccomend dan? I already have the celica set up, but could find IFS set up. When you did the celica ps did you turn the pitman arm around on the shaft? IS this possible? And I was just wondering how you went about mounting it to the frame? Do you live on 26th ave?

nuttzack 12-12-2001, 10:53 AM I am gonna have to come on by cause I am starting my 3 and 4 links with coils right now and could use a nice example like yours to look at! That is one awesome rig dude! What kind of coils are those? I saw it up on that ramp you have the other day and I have to say that is fawkin impressive man! What does it ramp at and when do you go to work? I usually dont get off till 2-3.
samiguy 12-13-2001, 03:03 AM nuttzack, you got your coil kit? I am still waiting on mine, should ship friday. He had a few problems fitting them on the Land Cruiser front axle.
nuttzack 12-13-2001, 02:33 PM I had to cancel my order for the toy axles, so I am making my own coil kit. It should be done in about two weeks. It's gonna be four link rear and 3 link front with aurora rod ends. It will be nice:)
samiguy 12-13-2001, 03:12 PM cool, take lots of pics. Why did you cancel if you dont mind me asking?
nuttzack 12-14-2001, 12:49 AM Well after waiting for 3 1/2 months for them to start the kit and take the money out of my account the $1650 wasnt all there anymore, so I had to cancel. I was able to buy eveything I needed to make the kit my self for roughly $1000. I bought 30 feet 1 3/8 dom tubing with 1/4 wall for the links and aurora 3/4 inch heims to complete them. I am using the QA1 coils like in the shaffer kit. They were way cheap like $35 each. I have spent the last week making some of the mounts and figuring out the angles. I will tell you it is pretty tough to do your self, but I am gonna love the fact I did it myself. Hope you like your kit, should be awesome with those landcruiser axles!!
