: Dana 44 measurements

before anyone flames me for this- yes, i have asked this question before, in the General 4x4 forum, but i never got a satisfactory answer and before anyone mentions it, i can't go measure one because i haven't found one yet, but hopefully, i will soon and with your help, it will be what i need.

ok, i have gotten 2 measurements for front 74-79 Wagoneer Dana 44's, one wms-wms says it's 61.75, another says 62.5. they both came from the same guy who cut his up and put it under a CJ. i need to know which is correct or if both are. that's the first question, which i know has been gone over and over and over, but there are about 20 places on the web and about 7 different measurements, so, i don't know which is right, anyway, due to the closeness of both measurements, it's not quite as important as the next one i am going to ask for:

i need to know how much tube there is between the housing and the C. the reason for this is that i want to mount the front axle under my Kia Sportage using Early Bronco arms and there has to be enough room for the wedges, if not, i'll have to use a fullsize chevy axle and cut it down. i don't want to do that and i don't trust myself doing it yet, so, i was hoping this axle would have the room to use these arms because i also don't have the fab skills to build a 3, 4 or 5 link set-up, especially within the confines of my vehicle. oh, and i could never afford to pay someone to do all this work for me, so, i gotta do it, which means, it's got to be somewhat easy (although, i know it's not going to be EASY). thanks for any info you can give me, i will check back later.

The short answer is that their were 3 different size front 44's used in FSJ's in the 70's.

Measure the axle shafts. That is the best reference. WMS can change depending on everything that bolts on. After all the research that I did including the charts that MrN. has, it still came down to measuring the axle shafts. As far as the room for your susp, i dont have input.

thanks for the info.

anyone else got any?

the total width is not as important as the tube measurement, mainly the one between the passenger side diff and the passenger side Knuckle "C". just need to know if there is at least 3-4" there for the Bronco arm to mount to the axle, thanks.

a few years ago I had a '74 waggy 44 front. I never measured it stock, but with Ford hub conversion on it, it was 61.75.

BTW, I found a pic of that same 44...you be the judge if there is enough room for the wedges (I don't think there is)

thanks for that, that's perfect, i think there will be enough room, actually, i saw a website where a guy ground the wedges down so they'd fit over the spring pad area of the housing and part of the tube and it worked perfectly, so i think this is what i'll do. thanks a lot for that photo.

there are two housing sizes narrow track, like Joel has (the picture) and wide track. then you have 8 lug which makes the mounting flange distances greater.
