: Mini spool - pro's & con's
nwmud 12-07-2001, 11:04 AM I considering installing a mini spool in a Ford 9" in a full size Bronco. At least until I can afford a Detroit for the truck.
What is your opinion on the mini spool idea???

Do us all a favor, DO a search.. This has been hammered out already..
F'n Newbies..
if it is just teporary until a detroit why not just weld it, you don't need your spiders anyways
84xtracab 12-07-2001, 11:23 AM I hate the mini spools...
Try these!

RoCkSkuLLz 12-07-2001, 11:33 AM just weld it up... better than wasting 50 bucks or whatever on a mini-spool. cost about a buck in wire and gas to weld :D

Hey Stve,
I did do a search first!
I was hoping to get real information about the waya minispool works with a FORD 9" installed in a FULL-SIZE BRONCO. Don't care about how it works in a Jeep, or the way it works in a Toy. Not interested in how someones cage looks, or how good the wheeling was last week. Just information about the use of a mini spool in a Ford 9" installed in a full size rig. 3 responses so far, and not one was thought out. :nuke: go ahead - flame me, but include useful information about minispools or :flipoff2:

Look someone who can provide a real thought.
:)
Thanks

EBSTEVE 12-07-2001, 12:02 PM I ran a minispool in my 9" EB. I would say save the money and weld it up either way the pin is going to be the weak link. Go the Randy's R&P on airport road if you want to buy one should be around $25 for the mini spool and $15 for the hardened pin if I remember correctly.

Dude I did search and came up with 5 or 6 topics regarding a spool in a 9 inch. Dude learn to use the search function correctly.
If it is really temporary weld it!
why would you go from a spool to a detroit? thats a step backwards. a mini spool still uses the stock carrier and that is your weak link. just buy a REAL spool and be done with it.
sounds to me like you first need to know the diffrence between a spool and a locker. if you were looking for a temporary traction aid that is a locker you want a lock right not a mini spool. oh and by the way any locker or spool you get works the same regardless of what rig you put it in.
nwmud 12-07-2001, 12:22 PM When I searched for spool there was 263 responses, when I searched for mini spool there was 20 responses.
I guess you could say I'm lazy cause I did not look at all 263 reponses to "spool". I felt that I would enjoy some new thoughts on the subject. Like how does this handle compared to a locker. From what I understand - the mini spool is for more predictable. What I have found in the Ford area is a mixed set of comments, Many people have bent or broken the Hardened pin.
This is why I posted the question was to get a better feeling of what people felt about the use of a minispool in a full size rig. More details would be
Bronco, 302, auto, NP-208, open diffs (obviously), 3.50 gears turning 36" TSL swampers.

nwmud 12-07-2001, 12:25 PM Thanks Camo,
So there is no difference with the weight factor on how a mini spool would hold up or react. I do realize a spool would last longer than a mini spool. What about axle breakage. Is this more likely to increase with a spool or mini spool over a detroit? Not that we have ever broken an axle, just don't want to start carring spare axles unless we got too.
Thanks

84xtracab 12-07-2001, 12:28 PM Sorry for the wooden spool picture...
Weld the spiders gears in the diff.
You can weld the diff with out having the hassle of wrenching parts in a spool installation.
Remember that you are going to loose the spider gears when you go to the Detroit later so damaging the spiders should not be an issue.
brector 12-07-2001, 12:31 PM A spool is like welding it - no more moving spider gears. Your rear is locked %100 of the time. A detroit (or other lockers for that matter) engage and disengage - this is why people say a spool is more predictable. What makes a detroit better over other lockers is it usually replaces the carrier.
The Rockslut 12-07-2001, 02:56 PM Alright, Camo is 100% correct. Just save the money on the Detroit and the mini spool. Spend $150 and put it a full spool. I love mine but then again its in a YJ with full width axles  but I do drive a full size truck :flipoff2: I love my full spool in the 9"with 31 spline stock axles, much better for predictability when driving and I feel its less stressfull on the axles to have a slight twisting in the corners rather that BANG!. Just my $.02 Spool it and forget it.
