As far as I know the shafts are the same size but is there any other significant diffrence between the two???:D

They are the same from knuckles in. Axle shafts are the same. Some of the ealier D44's used smaller axle u-joints and smaller, necked down axle shafts. Knuckles out is the difference. You can make a 6 lug D44 an 8 lug just by swapping the hub/rotor/spindle/caliper bracket etc. 8 to 6 lug the same thing.:D

Some of the later models all that is needed is the rotor assy and a caliper support those are even easier

There are two different bearing/spindle combos on the earily '70s Chevy D44s.

I think the brakes may be different. There was a thread a bit ago that said the 8lug calipers had a bigger piston from the factory than the 1/2tons. They also said if you buy a replacement caliper for the 3/4ton you will be given the smaller piston 1/2ton caliper. Thats all i can remember.

i think the axle tubes are different thickness too

My 6 lug D44 had 2-3/4" dia axle tubes whereas my 8 lug had 3" dia axle tubes. Obviously, you'll need new u-bolts.:D

The difference in tubes is in the year the 44 was made. The ealier ones have the smaller tube. Later ones have the larger tube. Nothing to do with 1/2 or 3/4 ton.

Yep, you are correct. My 6 lug is a '71 and my 8 lug is a '77. But it is something to watch out for when swapping axles.:D
