Thought I would post pics of S/N 001 build up to what I hope will be a rolling chassis that will go on display at cal rocs next weekend. After 3 hours of bending tubing I ended up with this. Had some issues with bender today.

Maybe this will put to rest the question of whether the end-user can bend his own cage for the Formula Toy comp.

Answer: No.
Reason: Airride is designing it to be bent with equipment that no one else has! :D

The buggy thing looks like alot of fun, I'm looking every weekend at the classifieds for a donor rig. Can't decide whether to go with a formula rig or just build something I like. (EFI & Full Width) As far as the full body thing, it's kinda nice kicking on the AC in the summer and the heater in the winter. IMHO two rigs will be better than one. :)

Question:

With the tube on the frame, front axle in stock location - what is the largest tire you will be able to run?

I know you can move the axle forward, lift height changes how big a tire you can fit, but have you worked out the numbers yet?

Air Ride
09-16-2003, 11:13 AM
we had 38x14.5 swampers on it and they had tons of room. 40s would probably fit. 38s seem to be the max the toy axle can handle anyway.

So axle 2.5" forward, with adequate lift - could a 42 fit?

You could always mount the cage 1" to 1.5 " higher off the frame for a little more clearance to fit the 42's

camo
09-16-2003, 08:17 PM
tire clearance would be more of an issue with the tires hitting the leaf springs than hitting the chassis during flex.

even with 38's on a stock toy axle you start to limit your turning 42's would be worse

material is showing up tomorrow and I will be bending tube first thing monday after I get home from cal rocs. Should be able to make two a week. You can do the math to figure when yours will be done.

DRM if you use a wider axle you can run any size tire you want because they will be outside the chassis.

Ditto That...

Also does http://www.hendrixmotorsports.com/ only have one Web Page to it??? All the Links seem to be broken for me. I was expecting to see atleast a link to the Stock Toy Class Rules...... But the only think I see is the following:

********************************************
http://www.hendrixmotorsports.com.futuresite.register.com/db4/00389/hendrixmotorsports.com/_uimages/formulaRS1r.jpg

Hendrix Motorsports' rock crawling chassis are engineered for safety, affordability, and strength. Computer designed space frame technology weighs less and allows maximum use of interior space. The chassis accommodates two front seats and a rear bench seat with ample room for spare parts, tools, and an ice chest. This competition worthy chassis provides plenty of storage for that three day Rubicon trip.

Also is it true that this will also work on first Gen 4runners (84-89) since the wheel base is 103ish??

Are these prices a complete welded chassis or is it in kit form that the end customer has to weld together? If it is in kit form are the ends already notched??

chassis are fully welded. You just have to weld it to the frame. I will have picture later on how it mounts to the frame, but basicly you can use the old mounts for the body and suplied tabs or you can you use the mount kit with pre-notched tubing or both.

it should work on runners too.

All the feed back I received was positive. We took about 75 brochures and came back with only about 25. Had a lot of interest from people wanting to get into rock crawling for the first time. Lots of comments on the overall look. people really liked its lines. Had about 5 people say "wow now I can do sometime with that old toyota truck in the back yard". Will post up some pictures tomorrow.

Mike, I had one quick question. I understand that the prototype was a rush job, but some of the mounts to the frame were, well...weak. Like the connections to the body mounts. Can I assume that it was simply because you needed to get it done, and a true ordered chassis would have stronger mounts, or is that really how it should be? I mean, on one of the body mounts, it was barely touching with just a few tack welds...

Otherwise, I REALLY liked it, it has some very clean lines, and the size is exactly what people strive for in their own buggies.

I was impressed! I want one:D It is basic enough that you can customize it the way you want. One thing I would change is right behind the front tires, I would angle that back just a little more so people can move the forward cab mount back and not have to worry about the front tires getting into the tube. I stood there drooling all over it fantasizing about how I'm gonna build it.

The stock body mounts were left on just to show people how it lines up with the frame. It can be mounted using the stock body mount and tubing mounts or you can cut off all the body mounts and just go with the tube mounts. I Will have some tech on how to mount it to the frame soon. Also tech on getting the old body mount off with out using a torch and messing up the frame.

I stood there drooling all over it fantasizing about how I'm gonna build it.

That was brought to my atentuoin and we are already moving it back.

What are you asking exactly? It's a bare tube frame, ready for the owner to start adding their stuff, fabbing a dash, probably a few gussets, etc, etc.

How much do you really want for $900? That's the cost of the tubing, grinding discs, and welding consumables for most of us to build one of these. Nevermind all the hours spent bending and then re-bending tubes that didn't work out, notching, etc.

The cross bracing needs to go in after the chassis is attached to the frame. It is also best to put the cross bracing right at the back of the seat. Therefore it is left up to the customer to install. I will post up pics of bracing the chassis in the tech post when we get to that point.

probably not, the slight differences in every frame and the differences in seat mounting will more than likely make it to hard for one kit to fit all. It will be easy to fabricate at home though.

i know your not done with it yet,but it's looking great so far. i was wondering the same thing on the X-brace ( but seen that was answered)but you said that the cutomer is responsible for doing that after it is all attached, but does it come with that tubing or is it something the customer needs to buy afterwards? also,(probably a stupid question) but does the front just attach to the frame also with tubing ( like the sides)..also what is about the measurement from the frame to the top side tube( where your arm would rest on)?

i was looking at getting a 4 seater, but that 1 looks like there is enough room in the back for the kid as it sits.

but cant beat the price since buying all the tools, bender, dies, etc.etc would run ya alot more than that.

the tubing for the X-brace would be extra. The front will have a kit to attach it and replace the front cross member, or the you could just weld some tubes down to the frame. from he top of the frame to the bottom of the side window is about 18". The costumer can mount the frame at any height above the frame he or she wants.

Since the tubing that connects the the chasis to the frame actually welds on well above the bottom the the frame rail, are you guys going to allow people to trim the bottom off of the frame between the front and rear spring mounts?
Also, how about lightening the frame with a hole saw?

Camo makes the rules, but I don't think he is going to let us modify the frame rail to much. Some holes on the inside of the frame rail would be cool though.

What is the purpose for eliminating the one u-bolt? Is it just for added ground clearance? Also, why not eliminate both?

camo

i intended to elimn both but there is not enuff room for the larger bolts so i had to stick with the smaller ubolt. i am building another axle to use for comps and this one will end up being a spare. what i learned by cutting this one up will make the next one with no ubolts

to get rid of both ubolts on the passanger side i think will require cutting into the housing some to make room for the nut.

i had it close without cutting the housing but it did not leave enuff meat on the pad so i went with the ubolt for now.

rear shocks are prototye shocks that are being built for these rigs by pig @ www.polyperformance.com

the reason they have the shrader valve is so we can test diffrent pressures and when we get them to where they work the best they will come charged from the manufacture with that PSI

from our initial testing I think they are a pretty kick ass shock and should work really well on formula toys as well as lighter toy trucks

Yupyup, them there are the new BBCS-15 shocks..... I've been doing quite a bit of r/d with these things and finally got the valving where I like it. Here are some of the benefits of this shock absorber.

-15" Travel with poly bottomout bumper & AL bump cap.
-5/8" NitroSteel® shock shaft, won’t chip or flake like chrome.
-High pressure gas MONO TUBE construction that dissipates heat more effectively for increased seal life and durability.
-Durable powder-coated finish for the best corrosion resistance in the industry.
-Polyurethane bushings.
-Welds done with robotic projection welder for accuracy and consistent quality.
-Tube ends are rolled closed for leak-free construction… other brands have tubes that are welded closed.
-Large, 46mm degressive (both compression & rebound) piston.
-Viton seal and low friction piston rod bearing for long life and no leaks.

:fj: stay tuned to the vendors fourm for more info.

Sounds like some sweet shocks, can't wait to see how they do :smokin:

I know this is more than a year old thread, but I thought I'd say sweet job on the S/N 001 formula Toy. I spent hours eyeballing all the f-toys at the last Tin Benders Toyota Jamboree - bravo for kick ass work!

Any chance I could come visit and check out that kick ass mandrel bender? What size die sets do you currently have? I would love to see those tight radius bends being formed. Do you have to have a different mandrel for every wall thickness tube (different IDs) or does it expand for a range of IDs?
