I'm finished f*cking with my damn quadrajet. I have had it rebuilt by a reputable shop and still the problems continue. Here's what i got:

AMC 360 +.040", 11:1 flat top pistons, CompCam 270H, roller rockers, mild head work, headers, Edelbrock performer intake, Holley red electric fuel pump with adjustable regulator

the damn carb won't idle below 1000rpm and continues to burn rich no matter how i adjust the mixture screws, when i turn off the motor fuel leaks from just about every where on the carb, the butterflies, from between the body and the base, the bushings, etc. about a couple tablespoons everytime i cut the motor off runs down on to the intake. i have the fuel pressure adjusted to 5 psi and i still get all this leakage. its like the carb is loading up and will suck the fuel down when running but spits it out every where as soon as there is no vacuum. the float has been adjusted down slightly so i knows its not overflowing the bowl. i have spent more damn money on this carb, having it rebuilt and several books on how to tune it. i quit!

i hear all the time that the qjet is the best off road carb but i cant get my to do squat. i do mostly trail riding, a few rocks and some mud. what other carb should i consider? should i even consider a jet performance qjet? petersons did a test earlier this year and their qjet kicked ass (according to them). is mine a lemon or what? yeah fuel injection would be nice but what does that cost!?!? i welcome all suggestions.:nuke:

thanks,

mike

Nothing wrong with q-jets in general, just yours! Nothing wrong with EFI, just don't get an analog holley projection.

If you can't fix the carb, you're not going to like programming EFI so I won't mention that.

Why not slap on a holley like the rest of the crowd?

I've done a couple q-jet rebuilds....

First, disassemble entirely and take the baseplate in to get the primaries rebushed. This is the most frequent problem with these carbs....you get nasty vacuum leaks otherwise, making tuning near impossible. IMO, this is your primary problem.

Second, during reassembly, use epoxy as shown in the HP Books Q-jet manual. This process prevents the drain-down you are experiencing now.

If you don't have the HP manual, get it. By far the best of those I've used. Chiltons is junk, as is Haynes. Neither are complete.

Your fuel pressure may still be a tad high....are you running a return line or not?

i dont have a return line. would that be a simple fix? what about the poor idle and rich condition?

Damn feel sorry for you, if you had it "rebuilt" by a carb shop and it still leaks like a stuck pig I would take it back to the shop and tell them you want them to actually rebuild it. It sounds like you just got a simple autoparts store rebuild kit thrown in it when you really need to have some of the hard wear parts replaced. Good luck and I personally would not sink any more money into that particular carb and would look for another Q-jet. My personal experiance with them is great, no stumbling or stalling on steep climbs or off camber stuff.
