i am putting a 14 bolt ff in my 1991 chevy

i can either convert the 14 bolt to six lug

or convert my front end to 8 lug

would i just pull the spindels off of a 2500 4x4 or a 3500 4x4 and put them on with out any fabrication?

or would it be easier to convert the 14 bolt

never heard of anyone converting the 14 bolt(although i dont doubt that you can do it).... It prolly would be easier to convert the front. Yeah, 3/4 ton stuff should work. I have done the rear conversion on my suburban but am just too lazy right now to fawk with the front. correct me if i am wrong, but i dont believe you need different spindles, just hubs, rotors, and backing plates.

Is your '91 IFS or SFA? If its solid its just a matter of swapping on the new outers. If its an IFS P/U then you are screwed.

It is possible to convert a 14ff to a six lung.. There is a company that makes an adapter.. But it would be kinda dumb

Why would it be dumb??
Is it dumb because most of use could have the strongest rear-end around and not have to buy wheels?? Or is it because you really need those 2 extra lug nuts to hold on your 39.5???

it would be dumb because that adapter is just a temparary fix. You best bet is to switch out the front. Or just cut off all the lugs on the rear, throw two away and glue the other 6 to fit you bolt pattern.

My buddy had one of these installed http://www.rightgear.com/new_products.htm after blowing up too many 10 bolts (last straw was when he snapped the detroit in 2). Very well built, though a wee bit more expensive than swapping to 8 lug. Very worth in IMO.

so you are taking a perfectly good 14botl and taking away the major strength difference that prompted you to put it in your truck in the first place? hmmm.....for me a semi floating 14bolt doesn't seem like it's worth a bigger ring gear and a slightly bigger shaft. you have to remember, when you mount a tire to an axleshaft, it doubles the duty of the shaft. now instead of just tranfering torque, the shaft has to carry the load, and the subsequental sideloading caused by carrying that load.

All these 8-to-6-lug adapters are dandy... until you realize the hubs & axles still need to be machined down to fit through the 6-lug wheels

Go 8-lug or go home ;)

or you can just open up the center of the wheels, but that might be too easy. but I agree, I'm 8 lug too

We've made a few 6 lug full floater 14 bolts. Not to bad to do, just takes time.

uh, no.

IIRC, like u2slo stated, both the wheels and the hubs have to be cut

I am guessing that if they could get away with only carving one or the other then that is the path they would have followed.

regardless, I agree with showmek5, 6 to 8 adapters are a stupid idea
spending thousands on custom parts to save a couple hundred for rims

go 8 lug or go home
