: Steering ? for 79 half ton
Dayswon 09-15-2003, 09:00 AM I got a 79 1/2 ton chevy truck. putting a 6in lift on it this weekend and 39 boggers.
This truck is being made for offroad use, i need a beef steering for it? any ideas?
X-over and Hydro assist is in the future, when i get the money.
but what can i do now to keep it from riping off my front end and crumbling when i go offroad?
showmek5 09-15-2003, 10:16 AM weld a support brace on the frame where the box bolts up to it. Also, be nice to your rig, and you wont have as many problems.. Besides, the only thing x-over does is allows you to keep streering in extreme off-camber situations.. Read this so i dont have to type anymore.

WTF are you smoking? :flipoff2: I can sit perfectly flat and have issues with non-crossover steering. I just have to have a front tire stuffed. It doesn't have to do with off-camber at all, it has to do with axle movement when flexing.
showmek5 09-15-2003, 01:17 PM :flipoff2: your right... I didnt mean off camber.. I ment during axle flex.. Sue me:D ,

SlamChops 09-15-2003, 04:45 PM Hey Shawn,
Whats up man? Gonna need any help with that install? Just throw me a line. I think you'll be ok with the drop pitman for a little while. I'm going to get the weld-on frame brace, and the bolt-on brace from ORD so I don't go ripping m frame apart. That should hold you till you go cross-over and hydro at least.
showmek5 09-15-2003, 04:59 PM I would also use a steering arm with the drop pit,
SkyJacker part #CA150
SCOTTS_4X 09-15-2003, 08:18 PM why not get a dropped drag link? whole lot cheaper than a pitman arm (not that I have ever seen a dropped pitman arm for a chevy) . and yes, you will need a raised steering arm.

SlamChops 09-15-2003, 08:52 PM haha, oops, got my steering parts mixed up.... sorry bout that... dropped drag link indeed...
charlo 09-16-2003, 01:17 AM Avoid the dropped drag link if you can. Do your best with a dropped pitman, and raised steering arm. All the drag links do is correct TRE(tie rod end) angles. They do nothing to help bumpsteer or steering during axle articulation. Further more they break TREs easier also because you now have a leveraged lateral force on the tierod ends which were designed for push/pull forces. Only 2 TREs i ever broke were with a dropped draglink. Also if you price it out you can go x-over for about $200-300 so dont spend too much cash on all these things.

Dayswon 09-16-2003, 11:35 AM Ya, i just need something for right now so i can do some light offroading and figure out the kinks in my rig, X-over and hydro assist is a must, but im going to get all the little bugs out first. Sure Slamchops, ill hit you on aim and get something going, i got tree and WesG helping also, so out of this boards and all of us, we should get something done. ya, supporting my frame was the first thing i was going to do. was going to go to the shipyard and get some scrap 1/2" steel and weild to my frame.
SlamChops 09-16-2003, 06:40 PM 1/2" might be way overkill, a piece of 1/4" welded to the frame and drilled for the steering holes would be pretty beefy...
Oh yeah, lemme know bout this weekend, i don't have any problem wrenchin...
