its lookin like the PO messed with the wiring on the tailgate motor and i only realized this now that im about to reinstall the tail assembly after rebuilding the motor.
i just checked the wiring harness color codes and am a bit miffed and dont want to fry stuff.
Can anyone suggest a little wiring for dummies on this one? Im terrible with electrics and am worried i may damage the motor.

First of all, do you have a good wiring diagram? Let me know, I may be able to track some down at the local library.
Have you checked out the wiring diagrams from the manual? If not I could scan what I have and send it your way. There really aren't that many wires in there. If you want, I can take some pics of the wiring in the tailgate and stuff- I've been doing some work in there, and trying to get it all working properly. :fj:

heres my prob,
i have got 3 properly labeled wires. L, LB,LW. according to the diagram in the manual.
then i have another 3 wires not according to the color codes in the manual. (must be from previous owner and a change somewhere along the line)
reading the manual it seems to say that the L goes with L the LB with LB and the LW with LW---
My question is twofold-
1.- there seems to be 4 screwdowns and only 3 wires- from top(tailgate) to bottom-which of these do i use?
or if someone can accurately describe which colors go to which screwdowns from top(tailgatetop) to bottom.
also what may be confusing me is that the PO used one of the mounting screws as a ground-instead of the actual areas where the wiring is to be screwed down.
thx

I parted out a '73 FJ55 a little over a year ago, it didn't have the motor, but all the wiring was there. I still have most of the wiring harness, maybe I can get some clues from that. I'll let you know.

kewl,
anything that can describe the top to bottom wiring colors would be a start. thx again
Finally got out to the other house and checked it out- I'm away at college, so I don't have much time to work on it. Here's something- I don't know if it helps. This is what mine looks like- it is a 1970, mfg date was november 69. Hope it helps. :fj:
