: 73-87 rockcrawler pics?
hot 3lze 09-16-2003, 06:29 PM i have an 85 4runner i have been wheeling with. its got alcan 5.5" springs up front and 63" chevy springs in the rear. i am runnig 37's. i love the little truck but the old 4 bangger is tired. and i want something mouse powered. and im ready to start a new project. i lke the 73-87 k5s and k20's b/c of the silplicity. i'd like to find a jimmy or short box truck w/ an sm456 and small block. and up grade axles later. i'd like toi get some ideas on rigs out there. so if you have pics of some w/ stock bodies minus some fender triming i love to check'em out. and as much as every one likes 44's i dont want something all redneck and mud boggin b/c i can just ride w/ my brother in his big blocked 2 foot lift beast for that .;) thanks fellas- justin
American 09-16-2003, 08:30 PM You know. You might should put a bigger engine in the Yota, and maybe some bigger axles? That would be better than a big bodied rig IMHO.
SlamChops 09-16-2003, 08:52 PM yeah, i've seen a chevy-powered yota at the mudbogs, and all though it was built to the hilt, it fucking ruled the pit all night long when none of the full-size rigs could...
as far as rocks goes, you'd be a lot lighter than a fullsize, but you'd have the power... how can you go wrong? :D
American 09-16-2003, 09:41 PM yea... full sizes don't fit on the trails either. Let's just accept the fact that most trails are cut out for Jeeps.
JoeMama 09-17-2003, 10:56 AM Most fullsizes don't fit? Just MAKE them fit! :flipoff2:
k5chevyblazer 09-17-2003, 01:30 PM Rubbin is Rockcrawlin in a fullsize, I have never not gotten my K5 thru anything, just lock up the front and go over it.
And another nice thing, is that I can take 4 into the back country for a whole weekend with no problem and room to spare.
k5chevyblazer 09-17-2003, 01:32 PM Here is what I think of the mini's
pcorssmit 09-17-2003, 02:36 PM Unless you really need the space of the fullsize, you're probably better off just keeping the runner and swapping a motor in it. Less weight, and it'll fit much better in the rocks.

Kinda what I was thinking, but then again all the capable rigs run the 350, Dana 60/14 bolt combo anyway, so they are really Chevy's in sheeps clothing

bgreen 09-19-2003, 11:43 PM I've been wheeling my full size chevy on trails that people have always said it wouldnt fit. Only once in the last three years have I found a place where being too wide actually prevented me from finishing a trail. The rest of the time it offered huge advantages over the narrower, and shorter rigs. True, the terrain you run has alot to do with it, but unless there are actual size restrictions on the trails you run, wider is generally better IMHO.
Especially for stuff like this...
you would be much farther ahead to find and start with a K30.
shorten it to suit your needs
you get a frame that doesnt crack and all the good stuff that morons like me had to buy 1 piece at a time $$
