: Tranny Rebuild (HELP)

My tranny is making some bearing noise. I want to rebuild it myself and install a new clutch, but I don't know anything about the rebuild or which kit to purchase. From the folks I've spoke with, I can probably do it myself at home, but I need to probably take the bearings to be pressed on and off at a shop. As far as which kit to get, Petroworks seems to have more pieces (needle bearings in particular), but after speaking with TrailTough, they say I don't need them. I'll probably get the Petroworks performance clutch. Any ideas or suggestions on the tranny rebuild?
Thanks,

I would say petroworks is your best bet,, the front input needle bearings were what went out on mine 1st

IMHO, the more parts the better. You may not "need" them, but do you really want to risk taking the ting back out and rebuilding it again becasue the one part you didn't change goes bad? For $15 extra, I would go with the Petroworks one.

its really easy to rebuild one. Just jump in and if you have problems ask. I did my first on on my apartment floor on a tarp. I only used a 2 jaw puller and my hi-lift handle to pound them back on. Yes a press is a little easier but its only a loose press fit as the clips keep the bearings in their spot. I got a bunch of pic from my last rebuild. I can post em up i you need em..

I wouldn't go with the Petroworks clutch. I have blown one to pieces and so has my buddy. We are now running custom copper brass button clutches with solid hubs. You can get them at any clutch shop with all the bearings and new pressure plate for around $200. They are great because the more you slip them the harder they will grab. Just my $.02

Great rebuild on the tranny. For the first timmers don't forget the 12mm headed bolt in the extention housing ( drivers side ). Remove before tear down and install last, things will go easier. It's for the reverse shift rail.

A LOOSE PRESS FIT? WTFO? i rebuilt two at the same time, (being an idiot i also did it on the same bench)
I disagree with the loose fit statement. My bearings fit tight on both mainshafts and those little annoying ball bearings were A bitch to get in the right place. the rebuild was easy but i am amazed that you used a highlift handle. i gotta hand it to you. if that tranny holds upi you are the king of making it work.

just my .02

Fantastic write up, thanks! After tearing into an RX-7 tranny I was a bit worried about trying my Sammi tranny, but you make it look like a walk in the park.
