is the aisin warner 4 spd auto electronically controlled, or hydraulically controlled?

i'm looking into OD tranny swaps for my AMC 360 :)

has anyone ever heard of the 42rh? it was used on XJ cherokees with the 242 motor. it's a hydraulically controlled tranny based on the tf999, so it has a 2.74:1 first and i believe 29% OD.

thanks :)

1) the AW4 is electronically controlled.
2) the only trannies im aware of that have ever come on the xj are the aw4, ax5, ax15, some peugot crap.

The 42re is used in 6 cyl ZJs, the AW4 is used in 87+ 6cyl XJ. Both trannys are electronicly controlled. Unless you plan on a lot of street driving, you may wanna consider a 727 or 999. Either would be simpler and cheaper.

i've already got a 727 ;) (waggy with a 360 v8)

there is such a thing as a 42rh on XJs. maybe it was a replacement tranny, i dunno, but one of my friend's girlfriend's has a 87 or 88 XJ with a 42rh.

if the aisin warner auto is electronically controlled, i'm not even gonna bother with a swap, too much wiring and computer crap :(

I know you can get a adapter ( art carr ?? ) to put the GM 700R4 on a small block Ford - perhaps you could get a adapter to put one behind your AMC 360. At least 700R4's have a strong aftermarket and are relativly (sp) cheap.

Just looking through some catalogs: Advanced Adapters makes a adapter to bolt up a 700R4 to AMC engines - it's part number is: 716138 and the modified flexplate is: 716138-A. Don't know if this helps, but the cost pf a adapter and the 700R4 is probaly going to be less than any of your other options, and the service costs on a 700 are pretty cheap compared to some of the 4spd Dodge automatics.

eeeeehhhhh... i've heard bad things about the 700r. that, and any tranny i run will be behind my 360. i really don't trust a 700r rated for a TBI 350 on a 4bbl carbed 360 pumping out over 300 horsies ;)

i know dodge trannies better than i know gm stuff, so i trust 'em more. it sounds like i'm just gonna have to stick with my 727 for the moment.

1. Stay away from the AW4 for a swap. It is electronic and very complex.
2. Advance adapters say this in their catalog and doesn't offer any parts for the AW4 last I checked.
3. The trans. 42RH is a 727 based OD auto used in V8 ZJ's. The 32RH is a 904/999 based 3 speed auto used in the Wrangler only, because it is shorter. The old 84-86 cherokees also used 904 trans.

Hope this helps:smokin:

i'm pretty sure the 42 series was used on 242s and the 46/44 series was used on 318s. are you sure that the 42rh was used behind the v8? i know someone who has a XJ with a 42rh backing a 242. then again, it is chrysler... :rolleyes:

a500=40RH, 42RH, 42RE, 44RE
a518=46RH, 46RE
a618=47RH, 47RE

i know that the 518 is a 4 spd 727, so that rules out the 42rh (which i'm pretty sure is a 4spd 999).

maybe you were referring to the 46rh when you mentioned ZJs?

i was hoping the AW4 would be hydraulic... oh well...

thanks anyway

while i'm on this thought...

i don't think any of the 518/618 series 4 speeds will work on an AMC motor because they were used exclusively on mopar v8s. a hydraulic controlled 500 series might be used, but it could be too weak for a v8.

i've mentioned swapping the guts of a modern 46RH into an AMC727 case, but the guys on IFSJA say this isn't possible. any thoughts on that?

ok, to put one thing strait in your head, a properly build later model 700r4 will hold up to 300 horses, you just need to get the tv cable adjusted right and do regular maintenance.

brent, check out jet transmissions (http://www.jetchip.com/transmissions/ that might be it, i dunno).

even those guys can only get a 700r to handle 450 ft lbs. i'm not going to trust a tranny that barely meets what my engine will be outputting (about 450 ft lbs at the crank).

besides, i'd rather have something with the same bellhousing as my engine so i can avoid various and sundry adapters.

while it's tempting to get a 4L80E, the cost is prohibitive.

oh yeah... check this out for prices
