How difficult is it to install a new input gear in a np231 ( I need to change the number of splines) I've just never opened my T-case before.

It changed in the mid 90's and it's hard to tell just by looking at. I've got two 23 spline long inputs for a 231, new and old gear pitch if you need one. Cheapest I could find them for was $160, $50 + shipping and it's yours. | |
