Have a 1984 2-door Cherokee with the 2.5 liter 4-cylinder. The second gear synchro seems to be failing. Any opinions (and estimated cost) of rebuilding the stock 5-speed vs. swapping in a the later, and supposedly stronger, 5-speed. Would the latter option be a bolt-in. Thanks for any information.

I recently did this and i assume your talking about the shitty puegot tranny and then swapping in the AX-15, if not then just ignore it. But if so, well i'd say swap it, it is basically a take old one out, put no one in. But the AX-15 does get pushed back 2". I don't remember if it is 2" longer or has to be placed 2" in a different spot, either way it is not a big amount of trouble. The peugot is bloody expensive to rebuild too, and its cheaper to get the AX-15. Also look into a t-18 or NV4500 swap.

Thanks, I'll start looking for an AX-15. I've seen some prices on NV4500 and they're a bit pricey, I thought, but will consider that, too.

Make sure you look for one with an external slave cylinder. In XJ's thats 95+. The AX-15 internal slave is known for it's ability to puke it's guts out at the wrong time. If you find one with the internal cheap it is possible to swap bellhousings and a few parts to convert it.

You'll also have some plumming issues going to from master to slave with the tranny conversion but it's well worth it.

Thanks, again. I found a fellow who sells a complete bolt-in conversion kit and will talk to him, too.

You are going to want and go to the Advanced Adaptors web site and check to see what bell housing you will need for the swap. The AX-15 is not a bolt on. I don't remember the years, but some of the early 4 cyl. had a Chevy bolt pattern on the bell housing. Also, chances are you will need an adaptor for the t-case and or you will need to change the input gear. Find out which tranny and t-case you have and we can try to help you with a set up that will work.

A Jeep person looked at the tranny and said it was an AX-5, not Peugot 5-speed. Anyway, the parts to repair this are quite reasonable. Bearing kit and synchros will be $250 or less, total. So, I will likely go this route. Sorry for not checking on the tranny before posing the question, but sure did appreciate the replies.
