If you need the KY, then you are doing it wrong!

But seriously, I use Caterpillar Desert Gold grease. I work for the Cat dealer down here and studied the different grease properties, 4-ball weld, moly %, temp ranges, salt spray, impact resistance, etc.
Desert Gold is a synthetic that surpasses any other other grease I have seen yet. I even spoke with the engineer that had this grease designed for Caterpillar. He had Desert Gold and Artic Platinum made at the same time. Desert Gold is for "normal" temp ranges, whereas the Artic Paltinum is for extreme cold.
One of the design factors was not cost limited, it is actually a little more expensive than any other grease out there. It has 5% moly, surpasses any other grease on the 4-ball weld test, can withstand 18 hours on the salt spray test. Cat reccomends it on the big excavators for the bucket linkage. It is also used down here on everything that we can use it on. It does not wash out under water eitherl.
I also asked the engineer what grease he used on his car, he said Desert Gold.
I have packed wheel bearings w/ this and after driving for 18 hours, going through water crossings and wheeling for hours, driving back, and then taking the front wheels apart to cherck the bearings, there was NO sign of water damage or intrusion.
One thing I do not like about it though, it doesn'ty want to wash off your hands.

Hey JeepinIan! What kind of cost and for what quantity per piece? Do you get any type of employee assistance? Maybe even a "group buy" for Pirate, with enough interest of course. Could it work out to where it may end up cheaper than the usual stuff but better quality for us wheelers? Just an  to rattle around.

It's about $5 a tube list for a grease gun compared to about $3 for regular grease. They also sell it by the peanut can. I can't do an employee discount as I am only allowed to buy for personal use, and more than a 6 tube case they consider beyond personal use.
I don't know about other Cat dealers, but we only give discounts to our customers when they reach the $25,000 per year mark. That's one hell of a lot of grease.
The only place to get it is a Cat dealer. Check out www.cat.com for the dealer near you. Some of the dealers, if not all, have a website w/ the phoone # and you can order over the phone w/ a CC.

JEEPINIAN ... thanks for the quick reply. Nice to know I can get it local and quick too. Bummer on the group buy but no biggie I guess. Do you have all of the possible applications this grease can be used on? i.e. wheel bearings, u-joints, shackles, etc.

THANX AGAIN!!

You can use the grease any place that grease is needed. I specifically asked that question as well with the engineer. I use it on anything that needs grease on my rides and have never had a grease related failure in the last 5 or so years I've been using it.

As far as getting it off of your hands, I use B-12 to get Pennzoil Marine Grease off of my hands after I pack bearings... Oh, thanks for sharing this grease with us! I will definately buy some.
