Short of going out and counting my gears, I was wondering if anyone knew the stock ratios offered in 1986 for a CJ7 witha Stock D44?

Thanks

Depends on the engine.
4cyl. might have as low as 4.10's
6cyl. got higher gears. I know of a few '82 - '85's that had 2.73, 3.31 & 3.54's. So you really just have to see what yours are.
You may not have to count teeth. The ring gear should have the tooth count number stamped into it, such as 39-11. Dividing these numers tells you the ratio is 3.54:1. you can also get a good idea (without taking the cover off), by jacking up both rear wheels & turning the tire 1 revolution. While turning the tire, count how many times the driveshaft turns. eg: 2 3/4 turns is 2.73: ratio.

that ratio will work if it's not open!! if it's open you must go 2 revolutions!!

OK

a) it cme with a 258 (there is a 350 in there now)

b) it is open

So do I rotate the tire tw full revolutions andthen divide by 1 or 2?
Thanks

no, just mark a spot on you driveshaft, then put your valve stem at 12:00, while turning tire 2 revolutions count how many times drvive shaft turns.

The '86 I bought for a parts jeep had a 6 cyl auto, D44 rear and 2.73 gears (yuk!) Oh, it was a laredo, too. Open diff.

Seems like every '85 or '86 I've seen with 6cyl either has 2.73 or 3.31

Whoever at Jeep thought up the 2.73's needs to be taken out and severly beaten:mad:  I have two extra sets if you need something for target practice

After '76, the AMC 20 was the the only axle used in CJs with two exceptions. Some CJ-7s with the Borg-Warner Quadra-Trac transfer case came with a 30 spline, one piece shaft, offset, narrow track Dana 44. The other exception is in 1986, when CJ production was coming to a close AMC 20s were in short supply, so they used wide track Dana 44s in some of the '86 models. Bolt on compatible with any '76-'86 CJ, but wider than earlier narrow tack AMC 20s. Use of the Dana 44 in 1986 began somewhere between serial numbers ending with 049379 and 054173. The axles were flanged, but I'm not sure of the spline count. Common ratios were 2.73 and 3.31.

Yup, that would be me. Late 86 with the serial in that range. Well atleast 2.72 would explain my crappy accleration with the 350 and 700r4.

Thank all
