: got my 60 today
CrazyCraig 12-08-2001, 05:12 PM well I finally got a dana 60 it's out of a 1990 f-350. It is in really good shape, needs a one new u-joint brakes and calipers are like new. I can't get the lower king pin cap off, is there a secret or is it just stuck on. I know you have to take off the four bolts first:flipoff2: . But is there a trick to getting this cover off.

Jeepmangled87 12-08-2001, 10:43 PM I think a torch might do the job??:flipoff2: :flipoff2: :nuke:
livermore2 12-08-2001, 10:59 PM where do you live and how much did you pay for it?
badassjeepguy 12-09-2001, 05:31 AM gee im glad you finally found one for me, when do you want me to pick it up :flipoff2: :D
CrazyCraig 12-09-2001, 07:28 AM I was using a hammer and a chisel, it moved a little bit. I sprayed PB blaster on it and let it soak over night. I didn't want to break anything, but hitting it too hard.
I think a torch might melt the bushings and cause a mess.
I live in Pittsburgh, PA and bought it for $800, It needs one u-joint (other one is brand new the rotors are almost new and the calipers are in good shape) I am happy about this find.
BAJG  That's a good one, just weld some 60 knuckles on you high nine and GET IT!!
Where do I find the bill of material number????
Craig
Fullreversal 12-09-2001, 10:15 AM it will be on one of the axle tubes... sometimes they are difficult to see, so look hard

To find the BOM # you will need to look on the "long side" tube. they will be "stamped" into the tube. Use a wire brush/wir wheel grinder to strip paint/rust off it. looking at front of axle it will be in the center to top section of it about 6 in. from 'diff. housing".....Good luck-nice find!!
Nanuk 12-09-2001, 01:58 PM I just got one today also, only mine needs a few things, like everything but the housing.
:(
Try spinning the kingpin lower cap 90 deg from where it normally sits
then you should be able to drive down on the face surface with a soft face punch ( ie: bronze)
the ultimate way to free a truly forever frozen ultimate SOB is to drive right down through the grease cap on the lower bearing, this will ruin the cap but you should be able to find a common frost plug that wil fit............
:D
Slagburn 12-09-2001, 09:34 PM Torch won't hurt anything but the grease seal and make a smoky mess. There's a tapered roller bearing and race in there and that's about it, so torch away!
I whammered mine back and forth a few times until it dropped enough to do the opposing chisels thing. Still took 45 minutes on one side.
CrazyCraig 12-09-2001, 10:40 PM I go the lower kingpin out, heat, hammer chisel, penetrating fluid. I even managed to catch my drain pan on fire:D .
I found the BOM it is out of a 1986-1988 F-350. It looks like the only difference I can see from Dana's site in that the axle shafts are different. What is different about them??
