I am using a 1/8th" 7018 rod to mount a anti wrap bar support with shackle and am having difficulty keeping the pool on the metal while being upside down.
I tried turning down the heat (220 buzz box) and it tends to just stick the rod and not arc.
any suggestions for me? (other than getting a 220 mig LOL!)
thanks

i second the 6011..
however, you should be able to make that 7018 work..

try putting the 7018 in the oven for an hour or so to dry it out. It has low tollerance to moisture and does not work nearly as well.

try a 3/32nds rod, may help you out a lot.

I don't stick weld much anymore, but I used to do quite a bit.
I always liked the E6013. It's a contact rod (which means the electrode burns a bit faster than the outer coating). You don't have to hold a gap with it, and you can use the rod to help hold the puddle in place. This rod likes clean base metal and makes very good looking welds with minimal spatter. It's an all position rod.

True, but to dry out rods like 7018 (even for just a few hours of moist air exposure) it takes 500 degrees for 2+ hours. I still learning stick ( a true art :D ), might have to try some of the 6013 for my next frame fix ;)
i wouldnt use a 6013 rod or a 7013 they are a low penetration cosmetic rod...........well i say cosmetic but its a fact that they dont penetrate very well. A 7018 is kind of a industry standard where i used to weld (parking ramps) I was certified vertical up and overhead up to 3/4......a very basic certification. But you can get good results welding overhead, but if your rods got wet, buy new ones, they are cheap and who wants to wait for rods to dry in the oven. Make sure to weld easy, is it dripping or are you going to fast, what exactly is the reason its not working?

If the rod is dry it should work fine, I do 7018 overhead all the time but depending on the material thickness 3/32 rod might be the ticket. I don't know exactly what you are doing but from the sounds of it I would probably be using 6010 or 6011.

I asume that you are not a welder by trade and know that a E7018 is a DC rod , so I will third the E6011 for your AC buzz box.
ps... they do make E7018ac rods that will work with with your buzz box.

Looks like I just needed a little more time to try my hand at upside down stick welding.
I got it to work perfect with the 7018. I am using the a/c rod.
Trial and error and lots of grinding wheels!
Thanks for everyones help.
