: Engine swap question??
LOS-YJ 12-08-2001, 06:07 PM Just had a question kind of stupid but.... I am swamping in a 4.0l into my 87 YJ today I hoisted the 4.0L in set it in and then I bolted down the motor mounts.. After that I went to release the hoist and the engine started to tilt back big time almost as if it was going to drop back the ening would not saty upright it just falls back , is that normal ?? Why is it pivoting back like that?? Is anything wrong with the motor mounts. thanks

sfraser 12-09-2001, 02:59 PM After you put the transmission in make sure you hold the trany up with a Jack stand. Then bolt your transfer case. Then put the skid plate on. Then your motor will be set. Then have fun with the wiring. What wiring harnes and computer will you be using?

I have the harness and comp that I got with the 4.0L out of a 98 TJ the harness the guy gave me with the engine seems to not be all that complete so i got a harnes of a TJ in the yard and combined them. I am having trouble figuring out if the guages ar going to work or not I am pretty much having trouble with the whole wiring you know, any help would be greatly appreciated thanks

Here is what you told me when I said that a V-8 swap was easier than a 4.0L swap into a YJ:
"Well thats depending on what you want dude... They are different swaps, and if you think the V8 swap is not a much more involved swap than a 4.0L swap, your smoking some better shit then me!!"
Now, I sympathize with you, and wish I could help you. I will tell you this though, you are going to be screwing with that motor for a while because it is NOT an easy swap. I stated that the 4.0l swap was difficult, and information on it is not as plentiful as on other swaps. If I were in your position, I would set the motor in place, get it bolted in, connect the drivetrain and tow the whole thing to a shop that specializes in wiring. I am not smoking anything, I just know how a bad wiring job can result in fires and engine damage.

Lost_Soul 12-10-2001, 07:44 AM I am not sure about the cooling on the 4.0. I put a 350 in my jeep and it doesn't leave alot of room for a fan. I had to go electric and mount it in front of the radiator. Just something to think about when you are figuring out all that wiring. Electric is nice anyway.:vader2:
DE Jeeper 12-10-2001, 10:42 AM The fan from the TJ will work easily and if it didn't come with then just get a reverse rotation 17" Flexifan. Worked for me with the 4.2 radiator. As far as the wiring, you will not touch one side of the fuse block in the firewall. That side runs the lights. The other side you remove most of the rats nest. Take out everything that hooks up to the old computer and you will have 5-6 connections to make. All of your guages will work fine, no connections are needed ecept for the tach and speedo. For the tach tap into the negative wire off the coil that goes into the computer (for the 4.2, I am not sure what to do if you started with the 2.5). For the speedo go to the dealer and get the speed sensor adaptor for the CJ Mopar EFI kit this will allow you to hook up the speed sensor and give you a pass through for the calble operated speedo. The problem is the cable threads will not match so you will need a thread adaptor or get a new cable made, not a big deal.
On the TJ harness ignore all the lighting, AC and accessory stuff in the harness. Just hook the ignition and fuel system stuff up and it will work. Spend $100 on a '98 FSM and it will save you from going crazy. You can e-mail me if you run into more problems.

I see what the problem is. You either don't know how to read, or you don't know how to cut and paste for clarity. Your response on the first thread was directly under mine, and since you don't cut and paste, anyone would assume it was in response to the post above it.
There is no shame in having a shop help you. Don't let your ego ovveride your ability to know when you are in over your head. Based on your motor mount question, I suspect this is the case. Bye, deek.:rasta:
