Has anyone used a electric vacuum pump for their brake power booster? I'm having a problem getting enough vacuum from my chevy 350. What I've measured is 12" of vacuum at idle and a max of 15" at 3000 rpm's. This just is'nt enough to make the power m/c really work well. I know diesel semi's use a mechanical vacuum pump, but I was wondering if anyone has used a electrical vacuum pump.

You must have a hell of a cam in that thing. The electric vac pumps are expensive, go hydro boost.

Who sells hydro/boost systems? The cam is a crower hydraulic called Baja Beast. I think the vacuum would of been okay, except I got alittle carried away and added some 1:6 to 1 rocker arms.I also ported the heads but I don't think this would have any effect on the engine vacuum.

Why not a vacuum reservoir - the street guys use these to run their brakes. We used one on a buddies Mustang when he put in a stroker 351 - worked good, only 30 - 40 bucks at summit.http://store.summitracing.com/global/images/prod/norm/SUM-G1464_m.jpg

You said it yourself THE STREET GUYS! It will not work on a trail rig. It will only give you two or three stops and then it's done. Not what I want in a tricky spot goind down hill!
Here is a how to:

It's for a scout , but a FJ will be the same. Most guys go to a Hydroboost system because it kicks ass on a Vaccum system. More stopping power!

I've been searching around trying to get somemore information on Hydro boost systems. Definately sound like the way to go. Their are other hydro boost systems besides the Cad Eldorados. I'm wondering if a system off a Chevy Suburban, Chevy truck, or maybe even a motor home might work. Anyone have any experience with any of these. Just looking for the best bang for the buck. Right now I have 4wheel disc with Toyota truckcalipers in front and Cad Eldorado calipers in the rear, with a dual diaphram vacuum booster and a Chevy master. Almost locks up the 35" tires but not good enough for hiway speeds.

Dave,
Another option for you is to use an alternator from a Toyota diesel pu. These alternators have a built in vacuum pump for providing vacuum for the power brakes. I know they are about $300 CN at Canadian Tire stores in Canada. Not sure what availability is like where you are.

hit the yard, some mid 70's buick/olds-?? came with the elec vac assist pump instead of hydroboost. it looks similar to the unit master power brakes sells.
