: Tell me about the West

I'm bored between class and I am really starting to dislike this school and getting real sick of TN. Would like get out of the South and maybe move out west for a lil while and finish school.

So with that tell me about the West, not California. Maybe Arizona and New Mexico. I already know that its HOT as fawk out there so leave that out of there. Out of the major schools I know of out there U of Arizona and New Mexico State would be affordable and both have my major so info about Tucson and Las Cruces would be good. What are the schools like?

Things I'd like to know. Housing, areas around that would be good to look at for living. A little bit of night life would be cool. How about jobs, fairly open market all around or what? Basics and all that crap.

TN doesn't have a state income tax but has a high sales tax, whats it like out that way.

Just tell me some basics and things. Pros/Cons are welcome. I'm looking at heading out that way for spring break which is the first week of March to take a look at things.

I would seriously look into 2 places: Colorado and Washington State.

if you don't mind a little cold that is.

I have lived in CO for close to 22 years...plan on moving to Seattle after graduation.

NM SUCKS!! dont move here! :flipoff2:

I've lived here for 24 years now. I wont leave.

Locale: NM houses just about any climate you could wish for (except for humid and tropical)

Down south- (cruces) is desert, sand and cactus.
Middle- (Albuquerque) is high desert/low mountains.
North- high mountains

Weather:
summer- 100+ for 2 weeks.
Winter - 32 and lower from dec to feb. + or -

Definitive 4 seasons.

schools: public schools are crappy (if you have kids)
Dunno what the colleges are like. dont forget about UNM in Albuquerque in your school search.

Housing: depends on what you are looking for. If you like living in the desert then head south, mountains head mid-north. Housing is cheap as fawk here compared to just about any other place in the US. Water is seriously lacking and usage is minimal. You dont see water running down the streets from people washing their cars. ABQ has a very good landscaping progam that gives you incentives to landscape with native /low water plants instead of grasses and trees.

jobs: pay is one of the lowest in the nation. BUT so is cost of living. Depending on your market it could be VERY hard to wind employment or very easy.

Wheeling: EXCELENT! State wide. :D

but, NM ALSO has a really high crime rate, especially in the areas surrounding UNM

The tuition for Arizona state schools has recently SKYROCKETED, keep that in mind...whatever quotes you've seen might be the old fees.

Thanks sceep thats the kinda stuff I was looking for. I did check out UNMs site but they don't list my major or really even a business school.

The quotes I got for schools was from the university's websites for the 2003 fall semester. I think they had Arizona as 5k for out of state, ASU @ 15k, NMSU @ 5k. All quotes for non-resident.

Right now I'm an ass. manager at an Advance Auto Parts store here in town, but should only be temp. while in school.

Oh, no wife and no kids to tag along so schooling for kids is not a factor at this point in time.

More opinions are welcome.

The bars around the UofA have become yuppified ;) AZ's not bad. But it's certainley not for everyone. Living is fairly cheap here, so are the wages. If you like outdoor stuff theres lots to do (Tucson) but up until reciently you had to go to Phx for anything "cultural" at least now theres concerts here. Wether you like the bands or not is another thing.

 (Sorry, moment of immaturity)

Anyway, like mike said...Cost of living is cheap, but the wages go hand in hand with it. I am basically doing the same job here as I was doing in Denver for about $10k less per year

I'm making 40k less than I was in the bay area, but the budget indicates I'll have more spending money ;) Something about going from $2000/mo rent to $500 mortgage and not having a 2 hour commute

check out NAU (http://www.nau.edu/text/) in Flagstaff, AZ. Great country- 4 seasons, including snow skiing at the AZ Snow Bowl.

Speaking of NM, one other option. Live in Farmington/Aztec and attend school at Ft. Lewis College in Durango, one of the better 4 year small colleges in the nation. Its a 40 minute commute from Aztec, and about an hour from Farmington. Oh, and we have a little wheeling here, too. :flipoff2:

Edit: Don't even think about living in Durango, and you thought Flagstaff was expensive. ;)

Stay away from Las Vegas. We don't want you here. Umm... I mean it sucks.

Truthfully, in two days I pick up the Sammi and I'm headed out of this town at ninety miles an hour. Never to return. (Well, maybe for holidays.)

You notherners forget that we have 3 seasons down here...hot, warm, wonderful. And skiing is only 45 minutes for us...you could be on the beach in Mexico one day, and skiing a few hours later.
