: Plate adaptors !
Reddog 12-08-2001, 11:39 PM I posted in the wanted section, I'm looking for a plate adaptor for an SM420 / 3-speed LC t-case. I'd like to get either a new style Wardens or a Pardi plate........Anybody out there have one laying around that they want to sell ? Trading is always an option too.
Spaceghost has a plate that is about a third of the cost of wardens kit. I got one and it is top quality. The only major difference is that you must get all of the other parts seperately. The parts list and instructions are on extremebends site, his adapter is just like the one on that site.
SpaceGhost 12-09-2001, 04:30 AM Hey Don,
Hit me for for more info, I do trades. I also have machined indexing rings for the 3 spd bellhousing to sm420.

FJ45Mike 12-09-2001, 04:32 AM Reddog, get the plate from Spaceghost and you will be happy! I am.
Reddog 12-09-2001, 05:59 PM I just put a bid on one of Mike's on Ebay. It really looks good, BTW nice web site also. :)
I use my wife's account on ebay, " Lorine57 "
SpaceGhost 12-10-2001, 03:54 AM Don,
That's the first plate I've put on eBay. I recognized your addy, I'm using Auction Tamer and is a cool little app for auctions.
Thanks for comp on the website, gives me something to do when I'm bored. I'll keep in touch regardless of the auction outcome and get you hooked up.

Mud Guppie 12-10-2001, 09:53 AM I have no problem with my instructions being used by other plate suppliers but please remember "my plate has been rotated for no grinding to the tranny"
I have already had two different people contact me about my instructions and complaining about having to grind their trannys.
If it's not my plate don't call me to complain about having to grind.
If you have a question about installing any plate adapter, please feel free to call, it's your dime.
Just don't tear a strip off me if you're using someone elses stuff
Thanks for the time

SpaceGhost 12-10-2001, 07:42 PM Hey Steve,
I am truely sorry if I am the source of the misguided phone calls. I have been very forward about the design, and the differences in these plates with each person who has expressed interest. The confusion (and my fault) is referring them to John's excellent write up on the install, which is on your site.
However, I didn't grind on my tranny at all. Not sure why you would have to if you are willing to use a three speed flange and yoke, and grind or machine them. Any trail spares are going to have to have to be ground regardless. If I am missing something, I'm sure someone will enlighten me.
I will be much more careful and explicit when discussing this in the future.

Reddog 12-10-2001, 10:41 PM Mike's got a great product here at a very affordable price.
I only wish he had these when I last needed one.
The one in my Cruzr now came from Wardens a few years ago. It was the old syle he had, fairly crude. It turned out to be a good functional kit.......but I certainly wouldn't say I was happy with it.
First of all I was shocked to pay $300 bucks for a rectangular piece of aluminum plate, and a zip-lock baggy with a bearing and some washers and misc stuff.
I, being a machinist of about 14 years felt pretty stupid paying that much money for somthing I could have probably made at home in my garage.
Then there was the never ending grinding of my 420 case:eek:
I thought for sure I was going to go all the way thru. Even after that I still had to cut the OD of the U-joint flange.
No, never again, I learned a lot from that lesson. :( Although I haven't seen the new one from Wardens, I've heard it's quite similar to John Pardi's, which is a very nice product.
This time I'm going to buy one of Mikes, AKA "Spaceghost".
You can't beat the price , the quality of the machine work is excellent and the clocking of the bolt pattern eliminates the need to do the ol grind.:)
Another point about clocking that bolt pattern. It'll mellow out the driveline angles. especially when you go SOA.
I hope nobody is serious about the instructions being a issue. Hell when I got my kit from Wardens there were no instructions ! Tech articles are great for that sort of thing, so maybe next time just send a link ;)
I'll be putting it into a Cruzr within the next few weeks. Maybe I'll shoot some pics and post them.

Just to be real clear about it, it is the Extreme Bends plate that is "clocked", not Mike's. Mike says that his plate is like Warden's. Here is a comparison:
<img src="http://members.home.net/cglabe1/photos/bothplat.jpg">
Reddog 12-10-2001, 11:07 PM If we want to be REAL clear we should maybe measure some actual dgrees, eh ?
It doesn't take a whole lot to clear that big bulge in the 420 case. Like I said before, I heard that Warden's current adaptor is now more Like John Pardi's which has been clocked slightly to eliminate some of that grinding.
Extreme Bends may have "clocked" theirs a wee bit more, which explains the Pinheads' picture.
Get a pic of a stock case and lay it out there, compare all three of them.
I wouldn't want to "clock" my case any more than absolutely necessary. For one, it'll catch a few more rocks. Either that or your skid plate is going to hang a bit lower.
And more important, I'd worry about the lubrication issue. The case was designed to run at a certain angle to insure that the bearings get the right lubrication.
A few extra degrees may not be all that good, especially if it's not necessary.
Mud Guppie 12-11-2001, 09:10 AM No problem with the phone calls for tech support,
I've had several emails and a few calls and they were not all from your plate, one was an old Warden's plate, one from Redding CA.?, and I don't know about the rest.
My point was I just don't like people bashing Extreme Bends when it's not my product they're installing.
My plate is rotated that little extra so you don't have to grind or modify the two flanges (t-case and DS)
I still haven't uploaded the newest SM420 web info. The new info will load far quicker and can be printed with less effort.
Here is the temp URL for now, I should have the new stuff up soon!
I will have other tech/install articles like, SOA, locker and gear install, rear disks on a full floater, Extreme Bends latest front bumper and a rear swing out.

wngrog 12-11-2001, 09:42 AM Steven,
Welcome to the Pirate Board. Your products are very high quality! Glad to have you around.
Mud Guppie 12-11-2001, 09:58 AM Thank you Nolen,
A lot of my proto typing from the summer is finishing up and now I have this thing called "free time"
I can finally start doing the Cruiser Head thing again, and go Wheeling!
Thanks again!

soon to have one of those little red stars
I don't see how there could be any confusion about the extreme bends site only being passed on as a reference. Spaceghost made it really clear that it was his plate not extreme bends and that the reference to extremebends site was only intended to be used as a reference for instructions and parts list.
The plate I got from spaceghost is top quality. Hell, for the $100 bucks it was a bargain and getting the other parts really wasn't that hard. The extremebends instructions and pictures were great. I would not have even attempted to do the conversion if I didn't have the reference from their site.
I don't have the budget for the $300+ adapters and the purchase of the tranny so getting spaceghost's adapter allowed me to buy everything needed for the swap for less than the more expensive adapter.
Mud Guppie 12-12-2001, 10:04 AM Joey,
Spaceghost made it clear in his info,
Quoted from one of your own emails from above.
"Spaceghost has a plate that is about a third of the cost of wardens kit. I got one and it is top quality. The only major difference is that you must get all of the other parts seperately. The parts list and instructions are on extremebends site,** his adapter is just like the one on that site.**
My write up gets around to lots of different people and lists so I'm sure no one is intentionally misleading people, it just happens.
My original comment was "Don't tear a strip off me for someone elses stuff"
never anything about quality or price.
Hope this clears it up
steven@extremebends.com
Man I hate it when people pick apart someone elses post and make it appear that they posted something wrong. Instead they should just post that they wish to have some clarification on what was posted, pull the parts that they have questions about, and see what the reply is. 9 times out of 10 it will be a typo and was not wrong info, just typed in wrong. :flipoff2:
Mud Guppie,
First of all you picked apart my first post when what I did was put is when what I meant to put was looks. Give me a break
Secondly you ASSumed that I was calling you a liar when what I was trying to get across was that anybody that got plates from spaceghost and confused them for being yours is a MORON and I am surprised they can remember to breathe. I never said that anyone was being intentionally mislead. WTF
Thirdly what you did next was even more childish. You picked my post apart even more, bypassed the part where I said, "The extremebends instructions and pictures were great. I would not have even attempted to do the conversion if I didn't have the reference from their site.", and you said that you never mentioned anything about quality or price. What's up?
I never wrote that you were talking about quality or price. What you forgot was the fact that this whole twisting of words thing that you did started when I mentioned spaceghost's plate. Did you get confused because I didn't put a space between the two paragraphs, or was it because I didn't put---This is another plug for the plate that spaceghost sells and also another attaboy for the write-up on extremebends?
One big point that you totally missed when you said, "My write up gets around to lots of different people and lists so I'm sure no one is intentionally misleading people, it just happens", is that I hope your list gets to a huge amount of people because it is so good! I never tore a strip off you. I WAS JUST REITIRATING WHAT SPACEGHOST SAID ABOUT HIM BEING VERY FORWARD ABOUT WHAT THE PERSON IS GETTING, WHO HE/SHE IS GETTING IT FROM, AND THAT YOUR SITE IS ONLY REFERENCED FOR THE INSTRUCTION SHEET AND PARTS LIST.
Now that I am done with that I want to say a couple things. :flipoff2: I am sure that you are a great guy and items that you sell are also top notch, but damn! don't try to jumble my words around. If you have a problem with what I posted say so and say why without using minipulation. I can't believe that this is what came of me just trying to make sure that everybody knew that anybody that bought an adapter from spaceghost and confused it in anyway with your products was a MORON. I hope that I have said that enough so this is all cleared up.
Sorry the first time we "conversed" on this site was so f'ed up. I look forward to "talking" to you again sometime, just with better results.
David
Reddog 12-13-2001, 04:23 AM Now I remember why I don't post here too often any more.
It seems like every time you try to throw out a simple comment it turns into a major ordeal:eek:
I started this thread cause I was looking for a good deal on an adaptor plate. I got several emails from people who offered all kinds of deals, including used ones for as high as $200.
Then I was exposed to the Spaceghost version for $100, I'm sorry guys but that's tough to beat.
Who gives a flyin fawk where you get the info to put it all together ! If it's on the net, people are going to use it. If that's not to your liking , don't put it out there. If this is some kind of problem for the people at Extreme Bends then that's an issue that they need to work out. That's just business on the net and ya better get used to it cause that's just the way it is. Been there, done that.
BTW, I just went to Extreme Bends web site, very nice site, lot's of good info.....I even added it to my favorites.......
But that adaptor plate ! COME AWWWWN !
what's it made of ..Titanium ? or is it gold plated or what ? How do you guys justify $355 for a bare plate and an extra $100 for the hardware kit ????? Is that Canadian or American dollars ?
You know you punch them out on a CNC, how long does that take ? Aluminum is like the fastest maching metal on the planet !
I'd say you guys are cuttin a fat hog for every sale ! Either that or you've priced yourselves right out of the market ! No wonder it pisses you off when people call you about another adaptor plate!
Mud Guppie 12-13-2001, 09:11 AM This is also the reason I don't post too much
No harm intended Joey, I wasn't calling anyone a liar.
Thanks for the good comments!
There are a lot of potential plate customers so everyone can have their own little chunk of the market, I'm sure everyone making plates is making a few bucks off them, some more some less, but money is still being made, machine shops don't work for free either.
The info on my site is for who ever wants to use it, that's why it's there. I could have just printed off the info and put in the boxes with the plates but I didn't.
"other people" have torn a strip off me in the past for the site
Yes, Aluminum is easy to machine
Yes, I do use a CNC set-up, the only hand work on the plate is moving the plate from the mill, double checking it, then wrap it.
Yes I'll review my plate pricing
the plate cost approx $290ish USD with the bearing, seals, bolts, shim etc, all in one box ready to go! there is a rotated rear wing also.
Yes the Web is Great
Yes the Web can be pain, but I'll keep using it
I'm a busy person and maybe I should re-read my emails a few times before I hit send (I don't know??)
I have the added expense in my plate because it is an original design, there were proto-types, jigs, and other misc expenses.
"I'm not saying anyone copied anyone elses plate"
I'm in Business to make money, just think of the SH#T that would hit the fan if I had a copy of another plate and was marketing it in mags, web, shows etc.
I don't like typing so I tend to keep things short
I'm going spend a few minites later and figure out how to give you the finger Joey (those happy face things)
Relax all, I don't get worked up too often anymore and like it that way.

I instituted a 24 hour rule after I sent some idiotic email threats to TPI...I went off, had no reason to, said numerous things I should not have, and realized it the next day. Apologized up and down for it. Learned since that people "say" LOTS of things over the net the would never consider saying to someone in person.
For the few of you who have met me in person, I think I present myself online EXACTLY as I do face-to-face. If you don't like me here, you won't like me in person. :D
