: Dont know what we broke??? HELP QUICK!
toyotaboy 09-22-2003, 06:00 PM my friend was peeling out on loose, dry clay dirt when he lost all power to the rear wheels. his D-shaft spins but the vehicle does not move. I need to know which is more common in a rear D30 to break: RnP or Axle shaft? It was a pop so i dont think its RnP but im not shurebecause i can here a tick tick tick as the D shaft goes around, is it the axle shaft splines or the Pinion? Also need instructions on how to tear apart the rear end..... Im shure i can figure it out but would be very helpfull if you could give me some pointers...
Thanks in advance, James and dumb shit friend....
DozerDan 09-22-2003, 06:10 PM well the rear is a d35 not 30 and if both shafts are still in the axle and it is a 90 or newer then you didnt break a shaft, you could have blown the spider gears
UP_ROKTOY 09-22-2003, 06:33 PM spider gears are pretty common, i broke a few sets as described
wanderingwillys 09-22-2003, 06:34 PM Or if you are really clever you may have sheared off the pinion or stripped the splines on the yoke...
Step one is to pop the cover open and take a look around - If you greeted by a pile of metallic gravel it was the spiders, if not you have a problem up on the pinion shaft somewhere...

Actually it very well could be a dana 30 rear. Kaiser used them in the back of jeepsters:flipoff2:
toyotaboy 09-22-2003, 07:04 PM Ok i know its an AMC20 and we think we spun the axle shaft... know where i can get a cheep one and quick?

Very true, i read 30 and for some reason thought i saw YJ in there somewhere. I need to lay off the books, too much reading is making me see things:flipoff2:
66CJdean 09-22-2003, 07:32 PM With an open rear it could just be a busted shaft. That or the spiders would be my guess. Pull the cover and see what falls out:D
Monkeyboy 09-22-2003, 07:34 PM I busted the spider gears in my Dana 35 and it would drive a bit then clunk then drive a bit then clunk.

SantaRosaXJ 09-22-2003, 08:15 PM I gave him the solution to his question. He can pull the cover, if the spiders/gears look good then he knocked out one of his two choices right?

How are you helping?
toyotaboy 09-22-2003, 08:33 PM STFU Newbs! I needed an answer and i had never worked on a jeep..... thanks P&T Jeeps_ it was the drivers side shaft.... I am trying to figure out how to take it apart... dont want to break anything further and its not comming apart like my simple toy axle.. i am trying to unscrew the 4 bolts that are atached to the back of the drum and they seem to be loosening but not backing out... There is a plastic material cover over what looks to be the stub end of a shaft but dont know if it just poppes off or if theres a trick (Not really in the mood to break anything else today) thanks for the help... any sugestions on where to get a new shaft or someone on the board that i could contact to see if they have a hookup on one? What price range should i be looking to spend on a 2 piece shaft like this?

toyboy, unless your in a super hurry, ditch those shafts and have him upgrade to one-piece shafts, mosers are not too much I don't think, $250ish? that is the biggest drawback of the 20 (next are the tubes), replacing those 2-pieces it's like trying to bandaid a D35....waste of time/cash.

Even Newbies know if it don't work you you take it apart & see whats broke. No piont in guessing. Could at least put it on the newbie board where it belongs
:flipoff2:
First check what LUVMYTJ said if it does'nt have aftermarket flanged shafts. That's the most likely problem. You don't have to take anything apart to see if that's the problem (unless it has hub caps on it). There is a big nut on the end of the shaft holding the hub on. If the shaft is spinning, there's the problem. i would'nt bother with a stock replacement. You can get a flanged axle kit for $200 - $300. For replacement, you will need to know which AMC20 it is.
narrow track - 51"+/- wide - all CJ5's & '76 - '82 CJ7's
wide track - 56" +/- wide - '83 - '86
Quadra-Trac - all n/t - passenger side drop.
There's a stock one laying around here. Not sure who it belongs to or if it's n/t or w/t, but I'm sure you could get it real cheap. Let me know if you're interested & I'll find out. I think you were in Ataskadero. My partner lives by Paso & would probably take it down there when he goes Thurs or Friday.
If it's Q-T, I have a built one I've been meaning to sell. Superior shafts, ARB, 4.56's, & SSB disks. Again, let me know if interested in all or just shafts.

Well, this is only a temporary vehicle... he's in the market for a chevy so all he really needs to do is get it up and running again. Its his DD so we would like to get a shaft asap.... do you know where i could get some shafts pretty quick?
CJ-Jeeper
please pm me with info on those shafts, how much do you suspect you/he/she will want for them?

Damn, I did'nt see these posts. Still Newbie tech though.:flipoff2:
Not sure what you're talking about here. Remove all the brake stuff, including the hyd. cylinder. Remove the 4 bolts holding the backing plate to the flange on the tube. Put the wheel back on with the lug nuts on just a few threads. Use the wheel as a slide hammer to pull the assembly out. The bearings are pressed onto the shaft with the backing plate between them & the hub.
If you want new parts, contact STEVE N, he's the moderator of this board. In the 4 Whleel Drive Hardware catalog it's $130 for all stock parts including bearings & seals, ect. Definately not worth it. Check the For Sale board, there's probably one there cheap.
Tall Grille 09-24-2003, 06:26 PM Post a wanted add for shafts, If you were closer I could give you a pair of shafts, Most Jeep guys pull the 20 out pretty quick so there are a lot of axles laying around.
toyotaboy 09-24-2003, 07:06 PM thanks for all the help, i have it back together and its on the road again....

thanks for all the help (to those that actually helped...P&T Jeeps_, Keith Strong, exc) He broke the piece of stock that holds the axle to the hub and the hub spun around the splines...have that all fixed with a new hub for $20... If anyone needs some jeep parts let me know and i will get a list together and take it over to an old jeep guys house that i found that has just about everything imaginable made by jeep in his backyard......
Thanks Agian, James

I know I dont know all the answers.. but I know enough to ask others who might.. insted of bashing so called noob questions.. just answer them .. like others say.. if you cant say anything nice.. then dont say it..
I know an answer.. (all the noobs go to the others and just start bashing them on thier posts.. dont worry about if you dont know the answer.. just bash them..about anything..) lets see if they like it.. but lets not do this realy.. just making a point..
just because this pbb is for extream.. its like I ask everyone who said they are normal..
