What tranny does the 1990 have? It's starting to shift really hard through all the gears and slams into reverse :(
Is it a easy swap?

Anyone have a good one for sale?

I think it is a ZF HP24 (might be a 22).

I know for a fact that it is not an easy swap. Slade may weigh in with his experiences as well.

What's hard about it?

These tranny's (22's) rarely die.

Check your mounts. All of them. These will cause the same problems/symptoms. You can also modify the pressure in the valve body, but I wouldn't do it.

I disagree. This is the one job that I will bid high so I don't get the job and if I do, it compensates me for the trouble. Nearly everything else is far easier than any other vehicle or piece ofmachinery I have wokred on. You want difficult, take up wrenching on general aviation aircraft!

With the transfer case on the tranny, it is a poorly balanced, heavy bitch. Without the transfer case, it is just a cramped bitch and then, you still have to get the transfer case in there and the transfer case is freakin' heavy. Getting the linkage hooked up (and working correctly) adds insult to injury.

The ZF is a nearly bullet proof tranny, but, they do fail and when they fail, it is catastrophic. This summer, I put two new trannys and three transfer cases in the same Discovery... It did not get any easier, the only thing that got easier was due to the rusty bolts having anti-seize on them after thefinal go-round.

Before giving up on yours, check the kickdown cable action and setting (another real PITA is the kickdown cable, it isn't much easier when the tranny is out of the truck!). Also, change the fluid and filter (another task I prefer not to do) before you condemn this tranny.

Peace,
Paul

Alright I'll take it in for a fluid/filter change.
Thanks for the help guys.

Agreed. I changed the tranny in my '95 LWB after the front driveshaft knocked a hole in it. It pretty much just sucked. The kicker on mine was when I had almost everything buttoned up on the bottom of the truck and was getting ready to put the console back together and saw the damn cross member laying on the floor that I forgot to put back in. I think I would rather change a heater core next time.

It is like shitting socks boys. Must be bigger socks then you all are used to.

That was shop talk. It means the job is as hard as you make it. I made transmission jack mounts for this job and it goes quickly for me now.

Here is a big idea I lucked into for removing transfer cases and replacing them. If you deal at all with salvage yards and used parts keep a parking brake backing plate off the parts you are supposed to return. These can be fashioned into the best ever transfer case tranmission jack base plate. The Borg Warner and LT230 have diferent bolt patterns for the backing plate. Keep this in mind when doing conversions.
With these handy tools I find it easier to remove the transfer case seperate from the transmission.
