I'm getting a shopping list together for SAS and have some question. I have a 2000 Toyota Tundra V8 and want to use the Dana 44 HP from a 78-79 ford f250. I want to keep the 6 lug pattern rather than the 8 lug on the ford. I understand that I have to get the inner axles specific for the F250. As far as the gears, lockers etc., when I'm looking for parts do I look for Dana 44(reverse rotation) parts or for 78-79 Ford F250 parts. I was also told, in order to keep the 6 lug pattern, I'll need to use chevy parts(outer axles, hubs, brakes, etc.). What year/model chevy do I reference to when I'm looking for patrts that will work with the D44 HP axle?

Thanks for helping out a newbie.

Mike

I am going to try to answer this the best I can from the beginning

Buy a 78/79 HP44 from a F250

Remove the knuckles, outer stub shafts, calipers, caliper brackets, dust covers, rotors and hubs - sell these parts on pirate/ebay/ju/etc.

Buy 73-77 Chevy Dana 44 flat top knuckles, outer stub shafts, caliper brackets, hubs and rotors. Install these parts onto your axle.

Note - the changing point from Chevy to Ford will the the ujoint between the outer and inner shafts.

So for gears/lockers/etc you will simply buy Ford HP 44 parts.

One more note, simply by doing this 8 lug to 6 lug swap, the axle width will change by about 3". It will go grom 69.5" to about 66.5/67". The hubs/rotors for the 8 lug stuff are wider than the hubs/rotors for the 6 lug stuff, and it is near 1.5" per side.

This helps out a lot! Thanks!

Shoot me an email. I have both kicking around and can do the swap for you.

Not offering to sell: Just offering to show you how it's done and help with the install.

Is there a reason for the F250 axel? As long as the C wedges are NOT cast I would go for any HP 44 I could find, as I understand it they are all the same with the exception of the C wedges. I would find a 5 lug and pull from the steering knuckes out off and sell them, then swap to the chevy stuff from the steering knuckel out. The 5 lug stuff should get you a decent amount of money with the EB guys since it's a bolt on swap from drums.

The F250 has spring perches not C wedges.
As far as the swap goes from 8 to 6 don't worry about getting the 73-77 chevy or Jeep stuff unless you are after the flat top knuckles. Any 6 lug Jeep or Chevy outters will work so I would look for 78-up just to make it easy to find and the spindle is a little larger to boot. Like stated you will need to change everything from the Knuckle out including the stub just to be sure the snapring groove is in the right spot and also so the stub is the exact length you need.

Another Toyota tundra owner is in the process of having his SAS'd and that is what he is using.

Wideopen-there's currently a tundra owner who lives in North Dakota and is in the process of having his tundra SAS'd. It should be done by early October. The work is being done by Brown's Fabrication.Brown's Fabrication (http://www.brownsfabrication.com)

That was some great info. Now it gets me second guessing the 78-79 D44 HP.

Thanks,
Mike

Ok I did not know that, but it does not matter since it's not bolting in is it? I still say find a 5 lug and make back some of the purchase cost IMO.
