: Safety of bumpermount recovery point?

Paul's thoughts on the airbags got my attention about mounting a recovery point.

I have no idea what triggers the airbags on my 96 DI.

That said, mounting a jate ring through the lower driver's side bumpermount bolt hole - Is it safe? Will the shock of a violent snatch at that point trigger the airbag?

Joe:
The bumper mount holes are not sleeved. You run the risk of tearing the jate ring from the frame-judging from the wrinkling of my frame from banging my ARB bumper. The Jate rings are more commonly mounted to the holes where the steering gear box would mount and the lower hole there is to some extent, sleeved, and otherwise reinforced.

When a recovery point is mounted to the front of the bumper, the load is spread out amongst six bolts, well distributed to both frame rails and back along the frame a little ways.

To be honest, I'm surprised I haven't torn my frame more given my propensity to use my truck as a tractor at the camp and the Schramderosa.

I have run a one foot long piece of chain bolted through the passenger side steering box mount-until I bashed my (does anybody else see a recurring theme here?) steering dampener and HAD to relocate it-of course, I broke the first mount and had to "Redesign" it!

Thanks Paul. This is just on the driver's side, where the location on the frame is taken up by that pesky steering component. :) I didn't think about the load tweaking the bumpermount, guess I was just more concerned about the airbag.

I'd like to use the driver's side, but may hold off until I have a proper front bumper or can work something up that is properly frame mounted.

On late 96 disco's the air bag is set off by an Inertia switch that is in the dash. I have a 97 Disco and have hit and pulled my ARB bumper VERY hard and haven't set off the Air Bag. I hope this helps.

Brian:
I think that if you look, you will find a brownish red box on each front frame horn with a yellow convoluted tube containing the wiring harness. According to the factory workshop manuals (which I finally had a chance to look at), the "airbag crash sensors" are mounted to the frame horns on each side, on top of the frame and behind the radiator support.

I had an opportunity to work on an NBS Range Rover last night, but did not realize that the SRS system would be a topic of discussion today and as such did not investigate the system found on that vehicle. However, presumably, it is a similar system, at least to the extent with respect to the sensor location.

Peace,
Paul
