: hub saga - an update

So...I got the tap and the remaining parts of the snapped-off bolt out!!!! I cannot tell you how relieved I am.

The new tap that I got took some work to get the chunks of thread out, but all 5 holes have 2 inches of thread in them, a couple are looser than the rest, but when I seat down the stud they all tighten up fine.

Oh...did I mention the studs? They are super super trick (as far as studs go), are the EXACT PERFECT length and have a shouldered section long enough for the counter bored section of the hub and the drive flange. Should work out perfectly.

I'll run down and buy 9 more studs tomorrow and get the axles back on. I can take some pics as I do the install but it's pretty straightforward.

I'll take at least one pic after they're on.

Anyway, that's the latest. Briggs, looks like I don't need that hub after all...thanks for going to all the work of removing it and measuring it for me! Pendy also had a line on some spares...looks like I don't need them either (course now that I've said that I'll go and F something up tomorrow).

Thanks to JasonM for using his noggin, his vicegrips and leatherman to get the snapped tap out of the hub. I couldn't have done it without you man! :sniff sniff sniff:

Sweet Mike,

Give us the exact specs on the studs if you please. I may do the same thing (only with 10 studs per hub!!!). I do not want a repeat of the 5 failed hub bolts again.

CRAP CRAP CRAP CRAP CRAP:mad:

I got the short side shaft in, went to torque the nuts down to 35 lbs, and THREE of the studs stripped out.

Then...to top things off, I went to do the opposite side (the long shaft...see related post) and the axle slid right in. ARGH!

This was right after spending 30 minutes on my back getting the diff cover off (Cooper used some super sealant crap). I checked the caps and bolts to determine that the diff hadn't slid around in the pumpkin (it hadn't), went to try the long side shaft and she went right in. Dunno why it wouldn't on the first try. Weird.

So...here's where I stand. FRUSTRATED at all the BS that I've put myself through today...all in the name of stronger axles. What's worse is that even with all the abuse I'd given the stock shafts in the past, there was NO wear on them at all.

Pendy...check that hub. If it's a 10mm bolt that's holding the drive flanges on, it's the one I need.

I'm gonna get a replacement hub, get this thing back on the road and try to move on.

Hot...sweaty...tired...frustrated (and hungry).

Bummer...

I would take a hub and have a new one machined out of 300m ;)

Gotta love english pot metal...
