: RHD versus LHD NP241
dieselcruiserhead 09-24-2003, 10:43 PM I picked up a pretty good shape NP241D passenger side drop from Dogbender, then scored an unbelieveably cheap Chevy version, both from 1989. The Dodge has been converted to non-slip yoke, so I was going to put the non-slip yoke on the Chevy 241 and run that one (it's going behind a Chevy 32 spline NV4500). But when the Chevy NP241 showed up (I should have known better) from the pic I thought the guy didn't know what he had (he said it came from an '89 K series truck, but I though it was from a Suburban), the photo showed the t-case upsdie down so it looked like pass drop but in fact it's drivers...
Anyways, I want to use them both to make passenger side drop NP241 that will work with my NV4500. So, I know there is a slight difference between the bolt patterns of the Dodge and Chevy NP241s, but it's 'slight' and curable with a drill, right? :)
AKA, the Dodge NP241 will bolt to the Chevy NV4500 output as long as the input gear is right, correct, and I might have to do some minor drilling to get it to fit right, correct? (I hear there is only one stud location that is different)?
So, to do this I want to yank the 32 spline input from the Chevy and put it in the Dodge, then put the Dodge 23 spline in the Chevy. These gears are interchangable because the gears are the same (though the cases are different?), right?
Also, is a 23 spline, drivers side NP241 desirable for resale? I know it works well, would Jeep guys or Ford guys be interested in it or is this another thing that will probably take up dust in the garage?
Thanks -
orangefj45 09-24-2003, 10:51 PM i know that the input gears do interchange for sure, cause i have installed a gm input for a 4l60e into a dodge case.
the bolt pattern will work if you modify one of the 6 mounting bolt holes, but will "clock" the case up; BUMMER!;)
keep us posted andre.:)
dieselcruiserhead 09-24-2003, 10:54 PM What do you mean by clock up, rotate it up higher than where it should be?
Doh!

LOL, sold...
Grendel 09-25-2003, 09:41 AM I'd take one, too.
Although I'd convert it back to Chevy.
CRICKET 09-25-2003, 10:20 AM HOW MUCH DO YOU WANT FOR THE CHEVY 241. I RUN AN 89 K1500 TRUCK AND AM ALWAYS LOOKIN FOR EXTRA T CASES :) HOW MUCH WOULD YOU GET RID OF IT BEFORE YOU TEAR IT APART AND TAKE OFF THE FLANGE.
dieselcruiserhead 09-25-2003, 10:40 AM Well, all I need out of it is the input gear (32 spline), you could have the rest for $150. But a guy basically called it, he says he's going to paypal me at lunch. If it falls through you're next in line :)
CRICKET 09-25-2003, 11:06 AM let me know ill be back on and off the board through out the day and ill keep checking in on the thread thanks.
dieselcruiserhead 09-25-2003, 01:02 PM Sorry guys, definetely sold...

Any idea how far the case is clocked? I've been wanting to try this, but haven't found a Dodge 241 for cheap (currently running an '89 Chevy RHD 241).
Also, as far as I know, all Dodge 241 RHDs are fixed yoke (ie yours was not "converted").
Pete
dieselcruiserhead 09-25-2003, 04:15 PM Orangefj45 said it's clock up a hair, two other guys says it will be clocked down. I'm not really sure, but I'll try and report back... But my personal dillema at least is solved. The tranny shop who is rebuilding my NV4500 will trade me a chevy 241 for the Dodge but let me keep the Dodge slip yoke eliminator and other parts...
Also, I actually did think the Dodge had a non-slip yoke from the factory but recieved conflicting reports. It looks like it could have been either...
CRICKET 09-25-2003, 04:33 PM pcorssmit-when you do the swap let me know and ill get that chevy from yah, thanks:D
orangefj45 09-25-2003, 10:00 PM i know that all the ramchargers and 1/2 ton pPUs had the fixed rear yoke. if you scour the junk yards, you will find a bunch of them. i bought my last one for $100.
of course you can clock the case up or down. i'll check my cases and adapters tomorrow and get back to ya!:)
biggnome 11-10-2003, 05:12 PM Did anybody ever find out if the dodge transfer case was clocked differently when bolted to a chevy transmission? TIA. Tim
dieselcruiserhead 11-10-2003, 05:27 PM Yes it's definetely clocked different, you COULD drill your NV4500 rear housing but in my case I would have lost my 2 year warantee. Also the chevy and dodge casings are not compatible. I spend a lot of time and probably $500ish :( learning this... I ended up having to get a totally different NV4500 because of this. Almost all of the parts are interchangable though!
The Dodge 23 spline NP241 (bolt on yoke, not a slip yoke) is compatible with a standard duty Dodge NV4500 or any other 23 spline Dodge application...
In the end I went with a Dodge SD NV4500 and Dodge NV241 fixed yoke. Then the Cummins so here I was thinking I was chevy but I'm mostly Dodge :D
HTHs!
biggnome 11-10-2003, 05:41 PM Thanks. So how many holes would have had to have been redrilled?
dieselcruiserhead 11-10-2003, 06:25 PM To get it clocked right, all of them (6), but to clock it way down or way up (near horizonal), you'd only have to slightly widen one hole and it would work... They are almost the same spacing... Also, if you clocked way down, because there is a small oil pump in the t-case, I think you'd probably have decent lubrication still... But at the same time, to even drill all of 6 of them would be fairly easy...
I think a lot of it depends on which tranny you're using. So, which one are you using?
biggnome 11-10-2003, 06:30 PM I've got a 4L60E in my Sierra and I'm having a hell of a time finding a drivers drop 60 but I can get a couple military 60 still crated.
