: Dope ride in a junkyard

so i go to get a wiring harness in the junkyard yesterday and walk through the front gate and to my astonisment i actually find a rrc

i was like oh shit got to scope that out.
walk up to it and it gets better.

two door
manual
suuuper old
its got a knob to pull up off the floor to lock the cdl
its got a lever for h-n-l
and then another lever for overdrive and normal.
the thing is a piece
i pop the hood and its got the wierdest intake i've ever seen the airbox looks like a muffler going from left to right where the plenum usually is and im assuming is dual carb'd one on each bank.
under the hood there is a sticker that says its was built/from south africa
i have no idea how old this thing is
its got a steel hood its rusted and heavy as hell
its got those like british spec wheels that you find on old trucks (rosebuds or something. i dont know i may be talkin out my ass)
no center console it just carpet with the overdrive lever in the middle of it.
manual locks and windows.
the front grill has the verticle holes in it.

they wanted 500 bucks for it. but im sure they could even be talked down from that cause its such a piece.
anyone know how old this thing may be?
sorry no pics i havent quite entered the digital age just yet.

which junkyard????

lwg
09-25-2003, 09:03 AM
Get the VIN # off of it and look it up. That should tell you. I think they might also list when it was made in the drivers door jam, at least mine does.

How much rust are you talking about here? Might be more trouble than it's worth. Maybe you should tell us where it's at so that we can come by and take a look at it for you..:D

pendy
09-25-2003, 09:40 AM
I could use some parts off of it to keep my two door RR fleet going. If there is no console Then it could be as early as a 78'. Is the steering wheel a three spoke? Only the early ones have a three spoke wheel. Put me in line for the phone number to the junkyard after the other vultures,

If your not going to take it PLEASE post a phone # so get in contact w/ the junkyard.

we are talkin some serious rust here. no sills. the floor board is practically gone except for the carpet.
the hood has no paint on it except for the edges its all just rust.
i dont even know if it runs but it did have plates on it.????
i'll go scope it again later today.
its like ratty's junkyard or something like that. just a local yard in burlington, VERMONT. so sure if you guys want to just come on over whatever...
they said they are not parting it out and that they had already placed a call to R North....
i'll try to get a number. if anyones still interested.
this thing is a piece. but its hard to see a rover go into the CRUSHER (buhahahaha)

dumbest idea i've ever had but....
anyone know if its transfer case would bolt up or even the tranny to an 89 classic auto w/ bw case

If it has the 3.5, it should bolt up to a more recent engine with no problem. The engine hasn't changed much since 1963.

From what I've heard about Rovers North and old junk, they will likely suggest a boat and a piece of rope.

haha thats what i was hopin/ figuring about RN
thing is i dont need it and hardly even want it. (at all) too much work.
but its just hard to say goodbye....
it may be fun to just hack up though and cage it and shit. i dont know. just throwin it out there.

i guess i just opened up a whole can of worms.
i may buy it and the part it out to all yall. and make some mad crazy loot.
but you think that would hook up to the zf auto huh... cause i need one of them center diff locks.

and so when i do get the vin number where can i look that up to find out about it.

64rovr
09-25-2003, 01:14 PM
No, it wont.... the LT95 or LT85 has an integral transfer case with the transmission that cannot be separated.

If I buy it I will probably use a lot of the parts between my Series and the Range Rover.... don't that there would be much to sell after I was done with it.

pendy
09-25-2003, 08:29 PM
Dammit I want that overdrive.

The transmission is a married version. The transfer case is not a seperate piece so it will not bolt to your 89 RR transmission. Just give me a phone # and I will have it picked up. Hehehe.

I can not let 9V have it.

slight update

it was rainin yesterday so i didnt get back over there. and i have still been unable to find a phone number but i did give RN a call to see if they knew anything at all about it.

from my understanding it is like a 79-80?
it has the connected tcase/ 4spd manual w/ overdrive.

it has no floors, just carpet.
i dont know basically a lot of work.

hmmm... a brand new tcase... decent deal but i need to get everything...you got drive shafts and all the other fixins?

see i dont really have a) a trailer to tow it with. (im sure a tow could be arranged)
or b) any place to park it. i go to school in burlington but....

i'll go talk to them today (hopefully) and see what i can talk them down to and then see if its worth it i can try to find a trailer..

Besides, you don't have any trucks that can take advantage of it! :flipoff2:

Did you check that hub for me? (sorry for the PM-ness).

Pendy,

since your 110 no doubtedly has less pep and freeway speed than my 80-inch with the 283 Chev. in it, you are right. You need the overdrive more than I do.

I need it so I can have a taller freeway gear, but honestly if I am going to take it anywhere farther than an hour from Vegas I'm going to flat tow it.

If you need any spare parts for that overdrive I have an exploded one sitting in a box here at the house. :flipoff2:

I also know someone who REALLY needs that gear that you remove to install the Overdrive. Whatever you do don't throw it away.

Let us know what you find out about the RR. Could be interesting.

pendy
09-26-2003, 10:22 AM
84' D 110 with 94' TBI 350 chev to LT 95. Sound interesting? Will need overdrive. And I can give the takeout parts to a needy soul.

That'll be a sweet setup.

A word of caution though, I blew up the center diff on the LT-95 last year we ended up doing a spool and it has held up fine.

I just wonder with the additional weight if the LT--95 will stand the abuse. In Australia they run a heavy duty version where the center diff is spooled and they run part-time 4wd (someone correct me if I'm wrong) in the Perentie's.

You might consider it for the 110.

JSBriggs

Pendy,

If you get the Overdrive, make sure you get the Pbrake linkage as well. You’ll need it as the stock linkage interferes with the overdrive.

Thanks for the heads up Jsbriggs. Oh Serious One I agree with your thoughts. I like that mini 4pin that Coop made for Doug M. That seems to be the ticket. I am not keen on part time, unless a doubler is being used.
Still searching through my shiat for the mystery hub.

Oh and most importantly. If I manage to get this bought and figure out a shipping method then DEATHORGLORY is certainly due a finders fee. But if 9V beats me to it then he needs to recognize the young man responsible as well. Every college boy needs beer money.

here here....
the keystone lights are runnin low.

has anyone contacted the yard yet? i doubt that they are goin to let it sit around cause they dont typically do 'non-mainstream' (for lack of a better term) vehicles.

if anyone needs some more info or if you want me to go check anything out i'll give it a try.

oh and no finders fee needed i just didnt want the thing to go to waste. (shit i still may buy it for a beater, but i doubt it.)

I talked to the Salvage yard last Friday. After speaking with them a bit I decided to check shipping and call back. They were closed Monday. When I spoke to them Tuesday it has been sold. Someone bum------- me. Oh well. I will check at the end of the week and see if their story changes.

My old roommate took his blazer down there once. Usually a gate up.
Just to blow your mind....do you remember the quarry on lime kiln road....The road from founders hall to the airport....The quarry on the left is filled in, and will soon be an athletic field...the school got the fill from the Hospital project as they are making a huge underground garage. Needed a place to dump it.
68 acres was fun to mountain bike on.
For hockey dry land....we use to have to sprint up and down the hill that lead you to 68a.

At least we know who to thank for the gates. ;)

So, I go out to the boneyard to pick up my parts... Ask the counter guy-he gives me that look that is reserved for parts counter losers when confronted by Rover owners and points me to some zit-faced kid who looks too young to drive. The kid tells me he doesn't even know what a Range Rover looks like!

WTF-why do I bother to call ahead? Last week, they supposedly have two, Saturday, don't even know what the truck is...

(rant off)

Rover content, we drove the Disco to the boneyard and I had my Rover sweat shirt on.

Peace,
Paul

Sorry but that is wrong. The Perentie uses a heavy duty transfer case with a strengthened diff centre, but it is definitely not spooled. They use niflor cross pins and better bushes/thrust washers than the std LT95.

They allowed them, but after Freshman year they usually blew up like ticks...not that that really stopped us...just made it more expensive...drink wise

What wasn't allowed..or invented yet really, were mountain bikes..and you could not have gotten one through 68 acres unless you were willing to wipe out several dozen times. (wayyy rutted out from spinning snow tire retreads in vermont goo..just bog after bog) That area was set up (and it was bigger than the name implied) exclusively "fer shootin an fer wheelin"...Vermont was a little different then, I think, from my understanding the present political climate doesn't permit such places any more. There was a gate there, but it was never shut. There were always a half dozen mud encrusted vehicles running around campus (usually at my house). You have to imagine the ramifications of having that place (completely legitimate!!) staight across the street....after making it all the way home from downtown....then..do you take a left and do bongs and go to bed..or ..take a RIGHT..and end up pushing on the back of your buddies CJ (or Bitzy from Swampscotts fancy new Grand Wagoneer "noooo noooo sweetie ...nothing will happen to it..they are MADE for this") in frozen mud up to your knees ...getting out of there 3 hours later after abandoning the truck..again..and again....to recover it with the rover in the morning

which way would you have gone?...I would assume right....
I blame that place for this asinine expensive hobby (way of life?) that continues to this day....

can't believe they filled that quarry..we used to dive there..that thing was Huge...

RJ, who is that? Seth and I were having a little reunion. I use to stomp the guys coming to the crease for him...

Imagine that.

Didn't know about the quarry. We use to have a whole group of trucks, inlcuding my roommates sky-jacked suburban over in 68. Funny how things didn't change even ten years later.

Rover content: anyone running a saddle tank on their D90? After driving 24 hours this weekend, I need one badly. Too many stops...

Reunion continued.....trucks of all sorts were still at the school in my time....some were posers.....remember one lifted toyota that needed to lock his hubs to get out of his parking space during one snow storm....yet the escort down the row, got out just fine.

The biggest shame was our lacrosse captain(Ryan S)...more brawn than brain most of the time(but a nice guy). He allowed alcohol to get the better of his judgement as he tried to jump a snow bank on one of the atletic fields with his CJ. The CJ finished the year under tarps, as the roll didn't do it any favors:rolleyes:

FYI, mountain bikes were more at home on the Woodside juvenile center part of 68 acres....

...ah memories.

:D

I personally know 3 that are privately owned, all 4x4.

(1) One very early model (pre galvanised chassis).
(2) One that has been used on the beach a lot and is now being rebuilt (to rust free condition) and having a civillian body put on it.
(3) One that has been in civillian ownership for about 8 years now and is a veteran of many desert trips, but the chassis could be a bit straighter.

Early on the military would sell of damaged ones, and some early model perenties which had already had a hard life or were only built as test vehicles - i.e. (1). (2) and (3) were probably originally sold in damaged condition. Sometimes they were dropped from helicopters (with parachute) but one of the chutes didn't open properly or the truck landed at the wrong angle, sustained damage and was sold. I have also heard of the odd 6x6 which was drowned in salt water then sold. So there are probably about 15 4x4 and 5 6x6 that are in civillian hands.

More recently, due to budget cuts, the military have stopped selling them at all, even the really badly damaged ones. They remove all useable parts and only sell unuseable bits, like a really badly damaged chassis.

I have managed to obtain some 2nd hand perentie door tops for my IIA though.
