: Could i get some help with getting a better crawl ratio
RockyXJ 12-09-2001, 06:37 PM I need advice on what i could/should do. Now i'm slowly but surely getting into offroading and i need some help to help my Jeep (XJ) crawl much better. Now first off i know, and i will soon regear, but a quick question, are 4.88 gears available for a d30 and d44? If not, i'll stick with 4.56. Secondly, lets hit that t-case. I don't have and the ability to be swapping in a new different t-case and/or adapting. So is the teralow 4.1 any good? Are there other options i could do to get my jeep to crawl much better? Any help would be great.

Alright, i just did a search, and i see this has been brought up. I should mention that i've got a 231 tcase as well. I see an atlas is an upgrade and so is a Klune V. Installation isn't a problem, but more so price, but i'm going to get too picky. I just need some help advice for jeep to crawl like a mofo:flipoff2:
Cheers

that will help you with the gear ratios, just go to the calculator,
what size tires are you running? cause i doubt you wanna run 4.88s with 31"s and have the rig as a daily driver...
4.88s work well with 33"s 35"s and 36"s
oh yeah, what engine and tranny, auto?
with the cherokee i would keep the 231 add a slip yoke to it if yah dont already have it and slap a klunev in there and call it done. they do make 4.88 gears for the d30 and d44 but im not sure how strong 4.88s on a d30 would be.
RockyXJ 12-09-2001, 07:11 PM I've got the I6, its a 5spd, with an ax-15 tranny. I don't have a slip yoke, and i'd kind of like to avoid it, since i don't need it as far as my driveline goes. But i'm assuming i need it to put a klune v or something along those lines to it. I'm 31's right now, but i'm going to get the gears first then the tires which will be 33x12.50, and possibly 35's for on the road. Are there some websites out there that could give me some help, along with any prices and such.
Thanks
Jordan
Travis Waldher 12-09-2001, 07:43 PM ok, here are your options, since you said Cash was a problem.
Option #1:
Regear to 4.56 (think you can get 4.88 or lower but strength?)
Leave it alone. cost of hardware and install ~$1200 to have a company install them for you.
Option #2:
Klune-V, you'll have to shorted the rear driveline, add a SYE kit, get a CV, and even then your rear driveline may be too short for a steep angle, then lengthen the front driveline. Cost ~3,000, figure 2k for the klune, 300 for the SYe kit, 300 for the CV driveline, $100 to lengthen the front driveline. plus the odds and ends that creap up on you. (like changing the pinion angle)
Option #3:
combine Option #1 and #2 figure $4200
Option #4:
4:1 in np231 tcase, figure on upgradeing to an SYE at the same time (32 spline out put shaft) or your going to shatter your stock one and have to do it anyway. If you can do it yourself, figure around $1800 for this option, 1100 for the 4:1 kit, 300 for the SYE, 300 for the CV driveline, 100 odds-ends
(IMO - Option #4 is a major waste of money considering the cost and added benifits of Option #5. (Chain becomes weaklink iin option #4))
Option #5:
Atlas 4.3:1 - figure $2500 it bolts on, rear driveline length changes, figure another 300 for the CV driveline. added benefits such as more gear selections (front/rear wheel drive)
All costs were mostly just guesses, but good enough to give you and idea of what you are in for.
Lost_Soul 12-10-2001, 07:50 AM The tera low kits are nice. They don't take much time or knowhow to install and they will increase your crawl ratio by 50%. At least that is how it worked for the Dana 300.
SeanP 12-10-2001, 12:56 PM I have heard of strength issues with the 4.88s in the D30, bening that the pinion has so few splines. For that reason I am running 4.56s with 35s (which is pretty close to stock gearing/tire size ratio). If you are running 33s you will do just fine with 4.56s.
I spent money on a new rear drive shaft and SYE (about $600) that I wish I had saved and put towards an Atlas. Wheel whatcha got for a couple of years and then get the Atlas. The I6 has plenty of torque for that 3600# rig (speaking from experience here). Get the Atlas. You could even get away with the 3.8 ($1800 from Rusty's) instead of the 4.3.
Good luck
SeanP
Yea, I think the Atlas is the way to go. Go with that and you won't ever have to upgrade it and ya probably can't blow it up. I've already spent(wasted?) 400 bucks on my 231 for the SYE and CV driveshaft. Do it once, do it right.
Whatup SeanP? :flipoff2:
Jes
'93 XJ with some things on it...
RockyXJ 12-10-2001, 06:15 PM So who wants to give me an Atlas or around $2500??? Anyone???
Cheers guys, appreciate the help, i'll let you know how the upgrades come along down the road.:flipoff2: :flipoff2: :flipoff2:
