: Why is it that noone makes 16.5 Beadlocks?
ScoutII 12-09-2001, 07:44 PM Is it the economics of few buyers?
Is it physically impossible?
I know there is not safety bead on the
outer side of inside rim but who cares,
there will be a beadlock on the outside
anyways.
Secondly...why don't the aftermarket
rim manufacturers put a safety bead
on the inner side of 16.5 rims?
Is it physically impossible?
A matter of economics?
On both questions I'm talking about
aftermarket 10" to 14" wide rims.
Some nice very technical enlightment is needed here.
thanks mucho
All I know is that I plan to pick up a set of stock 7" Chevy 16.5" rims - they should have the safety bead from the factory. I intend to take those wheels, and make my own beadlocks out of them.
Should get me a bealocked 16.5" wheel, betwen 8" and 9" wide, and has the safety bead on the inner bead surface :)
Supergper 12-09-2001, 08:25 PM Scott at rockstomper makes them now on whatever rim you want...also I think the reason nobody else has made them in the past is cause something with the way the bead sits on the rim or something like that:D

Dave I have never noticed that chevys came with an inner safety bead. Nice to know. Were all of them like this or something to look for specific?
monzter 12-09-2001, 08:34 PM BIGFECK also makes 16.5 beadlock (I know these pics have already been posted but what the hell....)

I'm trying to decide between them or the tireloc system, when I can afford it.
Trail Ready (i believe) makes some in 10" wide. they are like $200 each so a bit pricey. Stephen Watson uses them on his ORD Jimmy and he said the new ones are stronger than the set he has.
FULLSIZE 12-09-2001, 11:10 PM 16.5"? why try? buy some 15's and grind...............if you have some 16.5s you haven't done your home work! get with it!:flipoff2:
tigger4x 12-10-2001, 12:09 AM CHeck out ROCK STOMPERS (www.rockstompers.com)
They have 15", 16" & 16.5" ... just the beadlocks, rims and beadlocks, and several kinds of fasteners to choose from.
I'm getting the 8 lug 16" in black!
ScoutII 12-10-2001, 03:32 AM "There's always ONE is every crowd"....sigh.
Dear Fullsize,
Thank you for your ever so helpful comments.
I thouroughly enjoyed reading them as they
were so very technical.
Being that I'm such a nice guy I will try to
explain some things that you have not thought
of before answering my post. Maybe it was my
fault for not being more specific.
1. I don't care how much you grind or how
little offset you have, Ford massive one ton
calipers will never fit inside a 15" rim.
2. I got a brand new set of 44" Boggers that
were for 16.5" rims absolutely FREE.
Yes read again FREE.
3. Yes I think I did my homework so far.
4. I'm finishing it up right here.
So may I end this reply to you persona non grata
in others words....lol...eat your heart out...smile
nothin personal
happy holidays!
Why run 16.5" tires? Well, simple enough, plenty of people out there thinkm they are JUNK, so you can pick them up for CHEAP :D:D:D
As for the factory Chevy rims with the safety bead - I do not know if all of them have it, but I do know some have it, and I would have to do some parts yard scrounging to see how often I see them....
And yet another good reason for me using the stock 16.5" Chevy rims converted to beadlocks is that they keep the tire centered more over the knuckle pivot, and that means SUPER EASY STEERING, no matter how big the tires are ;)
Lloyd 12-10-2001, 06:45 AM I've never seen a 16.5 with a factory safety bead, and have now two sets of factory wheels this size (one set Chevy, one Dodge) plus used to have a factory set on a Ford. I have been told (by Stockton Wheel and others) that NO 16.5 rim came with a safety bead on either surface, and Stockton refused to add them to custom wheels at any price. Seems like the drawings and specs in the Tire and Rim Manufacturer's Association yearbook would need to include this beadform separately, if it does in fact exist, since the 15-degree seat of the 16.5 was supposed to work without one (high pressure - high load design) along with the 19.5 and 22.5 rims. If it's really 7" wide then it's a 16" wheel, not a 16.5 - the widths available in 16.5 are 6.75, 8.25, 9.75 etc. If anyone can find and post pics of a 16.5 rim with an original safety bead I'd love to see it, because I don't think they exist. Welded-in beads don't count!

I find it amazing that the same person who called the steering and brakes of everyone on this board unsafe is advocating grinding on brake calipers for clearance. Hey fullsize, guess what grinding the brake calipers does for brakes- it makes them UNSAFE, because it creates a thin part on the caliper in an area that is vital for strength!
Scott@Rockstomper 12-10-2001, 07:53 AM We make 16.5 beadlocks. Look just like our 15" beadlocks (pics all over the site).
Somebody noted rockstompers.com (which doesn't work, yet) but it's http://www.rockstomper.com.
I have yet to see 16.5's with a safety bead inner or outer--Bigfeck does solve this by welding one onto the inner then beadlocking the outer. We've left the inner alone, as our lock kits are intended as a DIY kit more than anything, mostly for the budget-minded 'wheeler. Since we don't (normally) even see the wheel, we don't add a safety bead to it. If DRM can find us a stock app... there'd be a lot of grateful folks on this board.
There's one other way to put 15's on a Ford 1T front, that doesn't involve grinding... use 2.5" backspaced wheels. You'll only be eight feet (plus!) wide, but hey, they fit! :)

With the big dual piston calipers on a HP 60 front you can't grind enough off. Go to smaller calipers? Why? I want to stop. 16's you say? No tire choices there or with 17's. Guess 16.5's is the answer. :flipoff2:

exactly my thinking rodger, of course maybe the guys with their light ass jeeps don't need the stopping power that those of us with EB's do...haven't seen your rig in a while, when are you going to come down and run the rubicon with us california bronco owners again?

Working on it now ;)
And as I said, I don't want super offset wheels, it just screws up steering... SO modifying stock wheels seems to be the ticket to me :)
anybody interested in caliper kits that allow the use of 15" wheels on ANY 1 ton 60 w/standard backspace a lot cheaper than beadlocks !

Aaaaaaaah! I'm agreeing with DRM!
Bob, we're listening... I think everybody's interested in that.
Some specifics? What rotors/calipers/???

WOLF359 12-10-2001, 11:05 PM Here you go... 16.5 x 16", beadlocked inner and outer bead. :)
Cost, $100 in welding and machining for each wheel.

fcfred 12-11-2001, 02:07 PM wolf, stop it
we have been looking for those hummer beadlocks for monthes now with no luck, so quit rubbing it in
now my question is how do we get Goodyear to make a
38 to 40 x 13 x 16.5 mtr?
somebody answer me that!
Otherwise my 16.5 hummer wheels are goin for sale so I can get on the big michelin wagon!
WOLF359 12-11-2001, 05:34 PM fcfred,
If you are running stock width on the rim, and you want runflat as well, these are stacked up in the garage right now.
They only weigh about 10-15 lbs each.
The only problem is I don't want to sell them seperate from the wheels.

fcfred 12-11-2001, 05:52 PM I just noticed your post in the F.S. section.
I really just wanted the beadlock.
can you give me measurements on that like diameter, thickness and width.
I wanna see if it's possible to either get a set made or see if there is some type of industrial use for something similar .
do you think I could just make a ring out of aluminum and put it inside the tire and clamp it with the 2 piece rim?
