St. George, Utah: The stage is set as the world's toughest rockcrawlers are here at Supercrawl. Currently, they are staged at the various obstacles such as Randy's Ringer, The Wall, and all the rest. Expect some serious vertical romps today. We've seen nitrous setups and serious V-8's and they are about to begin at 9:00 a.m.

Nitrous? Which sanctioning body allows it?

Y'know, I love the extreme stuff just as much as anyone, but there is something about calling it Rock CRAWLING when they are all about the H.P. and now nitrous?

Seems somebody should come up with a better name for this - it is more like rock Racing....

UROC does not prohibit it. To my knowledge, the only sanctioning bodies that do prohibit it, are desert-race ones. I know at least one team who's running it, and I, quite frankly, encouraged them to do so.

Nitrous in itself isn't flammable, and further, the chances of something going horribly wrong at a rockcrawling event, where crashes happen in the 10-20 mph range, are pretty slim, compared to an NHRA event, where crashes happen in the 300 mph range, and *everybody* runs nitrous there.

Just refering to the fact that EROCC and NEUROC don't allow nitrous.

With the way the courses are being laid out, I don't see how the promoters could claim that nitrous is not within the spirit of the rules; they're designing courses that are almost strictly moon-launches. They're putting on something that is no longer crawling (hasn't been for a couple years now) and has morphed into open-air monster-truck-racing.
If you want to talk hazards, let's talk about a propane bottle--under pressure *and* flammable... and propane's allowed.
If it's not illegal, then it is legal. UROC doesn't make it illegal. Every form of motorsports I've ever played in, what isn't illegal, is assumed to be legal, until made illegal. I know it's an adversarial position, but I'm not going to build to what the rulebook specifies is allowed--there's very little to go on. I'm going to go on what the rulebook says I can't do... and build to the ragged edge of it.

From Erocc:

9. Engine & Drivetrain
a. Engines & Drivetrain must be free of leaks of fluids that pose a fire threat.
b. Turbochargers and superchargers are permitted for both the Legends and Unlimited Classes.
c. Nitrous oxide, nitro methane or alcohol based fuels are not allowed.
d. Engine & Drivetrain must be of automotive class and duty, as determined by ERoCC Officials.

I stand corrected on Neuroc though. It makes no mention of nitrous.

SuperCrawl is sanctioned by UROC, run under UROC "jurisdiction", with UROC tech officials, and UROC rules. UROC's qualification criteria allow competitors from most other sanctioning bodies, but if those sanctioning bodies have rules other than what UROC has, the rig has to pass UROC tech to compete at SuperCrawl.

Example: RCAA (ARCA) does not allow larger-than-40"-tires. I *ran* 44's at last year's SuperCrawl--and I wasn't the only one on 44's, either.

Basically, the qualifications to compete are that you finished well in any of a number of sanctioning bodies' events. The rules you have to compete under, are UROC's; SuperCrawl is UROC's event, not RCAA's, not Erocc's, not NeuROC's, not ProROCK's, etc.

I understand the confusion, but the bottom line is, if you are invited to SuperCrawl, it is for particular reasons (either you finished well, or you were a crowd-pleaser). UROC is inviting you to come and compete at *their* event, under *their* rules; it's portrayed as a partnership, but really, it's more like IROC--regardless of whether you're a road-course F1, Winston Cup, or whatever else qualifies for IROC (I don't know what qualifies), you can go to IROC and race under IROC rules.
