I have a friend with a 97 TJ with a 4 cylinder. He's running the 35c in the rear w/ 30 in the front (i think?). Anyway, he wants to runs 35's, and is pretty decided on 4.88's. His rig is his daily driver, so I suggested 5.29's to make it more bearable on the street. Whatta ya think? He was also saying that he wants to mod his engine out a little, so he won't need the extra gearing then anyway. Set me straight.

Well, to set you straight... 4.88's are the lowest gear offering that is offered for the D30/35 combo. You are correct, he is running a D35 rear and a D30 front.. If he wants to run 35's and stick with them, Id dare to say, he will be fine with the stock axles and a 4 banger... Im sure I'll be corrected though, and someone will tell me you need 60's front and rear under a 4 cyl powered rig with 35's  :D

yah need 60s. just kidding yah like he said 4.88 are as low as they make for the d30 and d35 and thats what id get cause yah need as much gear as possible to make up for the big tires and lack of hp the 4 cylinder has

35's are pushing it on the D35. i wheel with guys that do but they occasionally snap axles. 4.88's are ok for that set-up. 5.29's by the way(if they were available) would not be better for the street cause they are lower than 4.88's. again as mentioned he might think about up-grading to a D44 or superior axles in the D35. it's a catch 22.

Trust me you are asking for problems if you don't upgrade your axles. If you like to hit the stupid pedal at all you will be twisting you axles. I would find a set of old jeep axles, if you want narrow track you can get them with stock 4.27 gears.

Why would he want narrow track axles under a TJ? That wouldnt work too well  And honestly guys, how much stupid pedal do you really have with a 4 banger? Heck Ive bounced mine of the rev limiter numerous times getting ver the rocks with my 258ci, with 35's and havent broken yet.. of course Ive got a detroit which gets rid of the weak carrier, and I don't have c clips either.. but still.. its only 27 splines.

Dont worry about breaking anything the hampsters couldnt break a axle if they tried..

no 5.29's. Another good reason to own a Toyota. I think I'll just tell him to swap in some Toyota axles and be done with it. No breakage, and proper gearing all at the same time:eek: :flipoff2:
