: DII driveshaft thoughts
PTSchram 09-27-2003, 12:01 PM Gentlemen:
After far too long and a few too many $, I finally have a DII front Driveshaft. While Jamie Austin was kind enough to proivde me with the part number for the transfer case output flange (none of the "regular" parts places list a part number and the EPC won't work for me), I am still trying to figure out how I can run this driveshaft without resorting to an adapter plate.
It looks as though the flange that mates to the double cardon end could be replaced with one from a series one Discovery and bolt right to the output flange.
Has anybody tried this and found it to not work? Any other ideas as to why it wouldn't, couldn't or shouldn't work?
I can't believe nobody has tried this.
Peace,
Paul

I can.
PTSchram 09-27-2003, 01:00 PM So Mike, are you suggesting I should boldly go where no man has before and give it a shot?
If I blow up my transfer case, I'm gonna blame you:flipoff2: :D
You ever gonna respond to my PM?
Serious One 09-27-2003, 01:15 PM Yes.
I won't let you.
What PM?
Dee_C 09-27-2003, 01:58 PM Paul,
What about seal weldding the orginal holes and then drilling new holes 45deg off?

m016324 09-27-2003, 02:04 PM I"m pretty sure all that I did was change the transfercase flange to fit the dII then just bolt it on.

That's a lot more intensive than just putting a different yoke on the new u-joint I'll want to put in anyway.
We'll see.
Peace,
Paul
FrankenRover 09-27-2003, 07:20 PM Several have done this on D90's (Ben and KC come to mind). Just use the output flange from the DII and it will bolt right up. Easy as pie. Now with the increase angle on the CV shaft and non greasable ujoints along with a non-rebuildable center joint you might be asking for trouble later on.
Billster
ps. I have a DII output flange (on a DII lt230 I got off of ebay for $250 (and yes it has the diff lock) if you need one.
SUE ROVR 09-28-2003, 05:10 PM It will not work paul. The part of the ball and shaft center section is integral with the flange. You cannot just swap flanges.
Billster, the center joint is rebuildable, and cheap too, just needs a special tool.
Ask me how I know on both issues :)
Ron
SUE ROVR 09-28-2003, 05:12 PM BTW can anyone tell me how I got banned last time.
Also please feel free to ban me again.
Ron
PTSchram 09-29-2003, 05:01 AM It took me all of about 30 seconds to realize the front flange is integral with the DC joint...:( Another 10 seconds to realize the DI output flange won't help either.
Bill:
PM me about that flange if you don't need it, I don't feel like making an adapter plate when the absolutely, incontrovertibly "Right" way to do it is readily available.
Ron:
I certainly am not one to explain banishment, but if you could PM me with details on rebuilding the center joint, I'd much apprecite it.
Peace,
Paul
Sorry to hijack the thread,
but does anyone know if an adapter can be made for a reasonable amount of money to dit to normal flange (got the prop quite cheap together with the flange) I've got a series transferbox so the DSII flange won't fit and i have to make an adaptor of some sort? or buy a prop from jesse..... (good props but also lot of money :( )
Cheers bowy

I believe that either Bill Davis at Great Basin Rovers, or Steve (the guy who presumably bought Rovertym) can help you out as they both make such adapters for other vehicles and I doubt they would find this to be a major deviation. I considered making an adapter, but the time is more difficult to find than the $.
Or you could do like I am-buy an old Rangie and swap the body from the Series to the Rangie chassis. I believe someone around here has done something similar! Mine isn't expected to turn out as nicely though!
UPOVR 09-30-2003, 04:41 PM I also have a DII shaft and flange to fit on my '88 Range Rover. Mine has the square transmission cross member and RTE 3" lift. Will the DS clear everything or will I have to do some massaging/trimming?
Puffdragon 09-30-2003, 05:09 PM Replacing an output flange on an LT230 is easier than removing U-joints even if you could have swaped the shaft flange. You guys make these things too frickin hard, trying to reinvent the wheel and all. A DII flange should be less than $100 with a seal and all from the dealer.
